I found this expired beetle in the dog exercise yard where I have found an assortment of specimens over time. I thought that it was a piece of gold foil with rose and green metallic colors so I picked it up to keep the dogs from eating it. I was surprised to see that it was a scarab beetle of some sort although it was a bit worse for wear.

I brought it in and staged it for a focus stacking session and this is the result.

Looks like stamped metal. What a beautiful array of colors and textures on one little beetle!

Bill, I'll take a picture looking down on it tomorrow. It is a goldish green front with a roseish gold back half. Its body shape looks like a Fig Eater Scarab however they are a dull surface green. They are close to the same size however and I can definitely see some resemblance in their features, although not in coloration.

It's been beat up a bit and some of the metallic finish has worn however I believe in waste-not-want-not when it comes to specimens.

Thanks, Donna. That's what caught my eye as it lay in the gravel of the dog exercise yard where I thought it was a piece of foil off something that the dogs got into.

Without looking I am going to suggest Phanaeus vindex. A female.
But I have my doubts. We'll see.

Another possibility (I don't like 'guess') is one of the colorful Buprestids. Buprestis aureolentus (spelling?) or rufipes ?

Winner...Winner Chicken Dinner..!! That's exactly what it is. I looked up the Phanaeus which is also referred to as a "Rainbow Scarab" and I attached a copy of a picture of one (PICTURE TAKEN FROM WEB for reference only - NOT MINE).

Mines a bit more beat up although there is no doubt you nailed it..!

Bill, this is the Rainbow Scarab that you so wisely identified for me. I posed it for a few shots to show its full body and coloration. I can see a stub of a horn on its face which as you indicated is a female for the males have a pronounced horn. Perhaps someday a male will come along.

The magnified focus stacked image that I posted was taken as an angle that tended to distort its rounded face plate so it looked a bit strange compared to the different angle of the conventional macro images on this post.
