I have worked for AP at various times in the past. User Id, if you really knew ANY facts about AP you would know they never take money to choose what brand of gear they use. Never took money from Nikon or Canon when they used those brands.

Once they choose a brand that fits their changing needs, yes they negotiate a massive order deal with their chosen brands for their hundreds of staff still and video shooters around the world. Their thousands of freelancers are free to use whatever gear they have.

AP has often used different brands for stills and video at the same time in their history. This is the first time AP has gone mirrorless for their staffers and gone for a single brand for all their still and video needs. Other freelance shooters for them will continue to use their gear from their chosen brands.

If you actually read through the interview ,you read where the AP Director of Photography states some of the compelling reasons why they chose to go mirrorless including true silent shooting at events . It is just a changing world of media coverage with changing needs and AP has chosen to change with it to cover it best. Cheers

Yeah, thankfully they recognize the rude nature of the loud shutter/mirror combination in dSLRs. Mirrorless cameras *can* make noise with their conventional shutters, but when the electronic shutters are activated, they can be silent. If you're a foot away, you can barely hear the lens diaphragm stop down during exposure. It's quieter than a rangefinder or TLR shutter! Imagine a White House press conference without all the damned clackity-clack-clack-clack drowning out the speaker.

It will be interesting to see whether AP encourages silent operation, or they continue to use conventional shutters. At any rate, most mirrorless cameras are quieter than most dSLRs.

They will use silent shutter whenever they can, that is the plan. As long as there is no flash needed they can use the silent electronic shutter all the time. With flash they will use the mechanical shutter. The new A9II that they will be supplying to all their still staffers, and the older model A9 share an exclusive stacked sensor with super fast readout, so there is virtually no rolling shutter or banding which can be an issue with all other current digital camera sensors, DLSR or mirrorless. Presently only the A9 and A9II have this exclusive stacked sensor for fastest readout. There are leaks that the upcoming A7SIII will also have a stacked sensor, that is due to be officially announced July 28th.

I use the silent shutter all the time in my A9 and that totally saves all wear on the mechanical shutter which is rated at over 500,000 mechanical shutter actuations. So these cameras should last a very long time, even under heavy use.

IMHO this story is not so much about brands, but more importantly about mirrorless stepping up to fill its rightful place with real advantages for news journalists. There can be no better trial by fire for a camera than being in the hands of news photographers in all kinds of harsh conditions and in all kinds of heavy daily use. I should know from all the stuff I put my gear through in a career as a photojournalist for over 40+ years, including war coverage. Cheers

Doesn’t matter how much I do know about AP. You just gave us all the long version of “Money makes the world go round.” So, what was your message ? Mine was the same as John Glen.

And speaking of public figures speaking publicly, thanks to the AP, soon we’ll be able to hear what is spoken !
