The more appropriate question would be, "Why does anyone believe any politician?"
It amuses me that it is a Federal Offence for someone to lie to Congress or to the Senate yet it is not a Federal Offence for a Congressman or Senator to lie to the public that they represent.

And it certainly does not seem to be a Federal Offence for POTUS to lie to the nation!!! After all, he has done it daily since inauguration; maybe/likely even before... but then he wasn't POTUS.
