We will be attending a family wedding in Asheville, NC. Trip will include flight to Nashville (3 days), drive to Knoxville (1 night), Drive to Asheville (5 days), drive to Greeneville to fly home. Have scheduled the normal tourist stuff (Grand ole opry & lower broadway, Biltmore). Looking for suggestions for not-to-miss photo ops along the way. Special interest in the Blue Ridge parkway and great Smokies.
Thanks,
Bob

There are many photo ops on the Parkway (or near the Parkway) in the Boone, NC area. This would be Mile Point 290 to 310. You can pick up a listing of hikes and pick out some that interest you. If you are not a hiker, just look for overlooks. I am a hike club photographer (volunteer) and here are individual hike albums for each hike in this area to give you a idea of what's available. We hike 3 times a week with an album for each hike.

Oh, I would be glad to indicate which album hikes are available directly on the Parkway in this area and the mile point.

Sort of difficult to answer Bob, not being rude but simply open your eyes, the country is breathtaking.

As rebel hiker says, many wonderful spots along the BRP near Boone. Moses H Cone Memorial park has miles of carriage trails for hiking and horseback riding. Also, Stone Mountain State Park in Roaring Gap, NC has just about everything you can ask for - great views, a waterfall, deer, etc. That part of NC really is God's country.

THANK YOU ALL.
Sounds like this trip will be even better than we imagined. Will be driving slowly to try to take it all in. Have been listing mile marker stops on BRP from many on line brochures.
Sounds like I will need ALL the SD cards I have.
One final question - route to take from Knoxville to Asheville - we will have a full day to make the transit.

Here's a suggestion Bob, take 411 from Knoxville to Sevierville, then 441 through the heart of the Great Smoky Mountain State Park to Cherokee NC. Then Hiway 19 from Cherokee to Asheville NC.

Now this route takes your through one of the busiest tourist areas in Tennessee (Pigeon Forge & Gatlinburg). Depending on the day and time, there could be lots of traffic. Thousands of visitors pack this area because of all the attractions and its close proximity to the Smoky Mountain National Park. Fall follage will be hitting this area soon which makes it even more packed. But Hiway 441 goes through the most prettiest part of Smokies. Clingmans Dome is the 2nd Highest Peak in the Park and on that route. The highest Peak is Mount Mitchell near Asheville, so add that to your list. There are several pull offs along the way for fantastic photos. Most Notibly...Gatlinburg Overlook, Campbells Overlook, Mortons Overlook, Newfound Gap Overlook just to name a few.

Bob, I also threw together this quick slideshow of what you can expect here in Nashville. I have thousands of photos I've taken here, these are just a few I quickly found. Your trip sounds like an exciting one and I wish your family a wonderful time during your visit. I hope folks remember to shower your with "Southern Hospitality".

OR...... Once you get into Cherokee, NC you could get on the Blue Ridge Parkway and head toward Asheville. You will not make good time on the Parkway since the speed limit is only about 35 to 45 mph, but it is a GREAT way to see the countryside.
You might also want to see Grandfather Mountain and Lake Lure in the area. By the way, Clingman's Dome is the highest peak IN the Park; just a short drive off of 441 at the top of the crossing (Newfound Gap) from TN to NC. Mount Mitchell is not actually in the National Park, but still a great place to visit. You should have a wonderful time and, YES; get several memory cards for your camera. You will need them.

If you like ancient history, while you're in Nashville, shoot the exact replica (except it's not fallen down of course) of the Parthenon from the Acropolis in Athens. It's an absolutely beautiful work of art with some interesting features. One is that each of the columns, if extended upward on their centered line of sight would intersect at something like one mile above the base -- you can google it -- my memory may be off -- it's been a while since I've been to Athens. Interestingly, if the front steps are viewed from the side, you can see a noticeable rise to the center and then they fall off again to the other side of them. What is fascinating is that the ancient Greeks built them that way so that viewed from the front they would (and do) look perfectly level. If they had been built perfectly level, from the front they would look as if they sagged in the center. I believe there is no other duplicate of the Parthenon anywhere in the world. The one is Nashville was built some time I believe in the 1930s, for what reason I have no idea. See it tho, and shoot it. Living architectural art from the ages. If you would be so good, put up some shots of it when you return if you are able to shoot it. Have fun.

I have been to the Biltmore many times. Many photographic opportunities at the surrounding places. But you cannot take photos inside the building.
