If Jimmy cracked corn and nobody cared, why did they write a song about it?

That may be why he cracked corn, but apparently nobody cared.

My question is why did the author of the song write it?

He didn't just go away, he died. From Wikipedia: On the surface, the song is a black s***e's lament over his white master's death in a horseriding accident. The song, however, is also interpreted as having a subtext of celebration about that death and of the s***e's having contributed to it through deliberate negligence or even deniable action.

Perhaps the tune came first, and someone thought of words to go with it.

Where did you get that interpretation?
Anyway, could you blame the s***e if that was true? What would all of us white folk think we would have done if the situation had been reversed?

You should read more closely. I clearly stated it is from Wikipedia. Where did you get the idea I blamed the s***e? I just wondered about the origin and meaning of the song, so I searched for that.

A lot of great song came out of that era.
"Ole Man River" and "Swing Lo" are two others that I remember.

You can judge yesterday's mores by today's standards but you can't change them or make them go away. And, if other's judgement accepts rather than denies who is to judge which is right? But, the only judgement to be rendered is to understand, learn and to go into today and tomorrow repeating or not what was learned from yesterday.

Historical monuments serve as remembrance the past - as such, something of commemoration or denouncement; denouncement is as, if not more important than commemoration - more important as it is a reminder to avoid repetition.

I was not intending to BLAME you. I was sending a more generalized comment. I apologize for not making it more clear. I truly did not mean to offend you. I think I addressed my thoughts on the subject to you, personally. That was careless and I thank you for bringing that to my attention.
I was also not catching the reference of source to Wikipedia. All of that being said, I do still wonder how the source came to its’ conclusions. I wonder how many s***es had been interviewed and consulted prior to reaching its’ assessment. Credibility of this interpretation is important in making our own interpretations.
Again, thank you for bringing all of this to my attention. I am hopeful you will accept my remarks and response as an effort to apologize for my carelessness in reading your original remarks and making my remarks w/o appropriate thoughtfulness and analysis.

Someone needs a “chill” pill. S***es were freed in 1865 and thus none who were s***es are alive today. S***ery is and was wrong, but s***ery has been with man kind since the beginning of recorded history and is not practiced in the United States today, thus no need to feel guilty about the past.
