A mud dauber is a type of wasp. The female builds the nest out of mud and when finished lays her eggs inside.
"Mud daubers feed their larvae only spiders. Blue mud daubers attack almost exclusively black widow spiders. The spiders are stung and paralyzed, then stuffed into a larva cell where they become food for the developing larva inside. Leaving mud daubers in place will keep your spider population in check during the summer." This quote was copied from the web.
I read that they are not aggressive to humans. I am going to leave the cute little pottery in place.
