Any thoughts as to what you think is the better of the two?

I prefer the Norton 360. I have had both over the last 10 years. I don't trust any of them but I find the Norton easier to update & scan and do so every other day to keep it running quickly. Updating one's browser is also equally important as well. They get slow frequently and require attention on a similar schedule or at least with my old Window's 7 rig. We use the Verizon fiber optic carrier here and it has it's share of surprises as well when the power goes out and it needs to be reset.....endless stuff to drive an old guy crazy.......I live for this.

To be honest, conventional wisdom says don’t bother with either. They dig deep into your operating system and can be more harm than good. And... can be a challenge to complete remove. I have a Windows 10 computer and use Microsoft Defender free suite. The modern operating systems are secure enough, as most invasions come as a result of user error. Save your money.
I feel both Norton and McAfee are similar to having a harmful virus on your computer. To be fair, it has been many years since I have used either, but when I did, they slowed my PC down considerably. I have been using Sophos on my Mac for the last 5 years (free version) with no issues.

I have used both. Both tended to be memory hogs that slowed the computer noticeably.
Are you asking for PC (Windows) or Mac?
USA Today rated antivirus programs for PC last month; Norton placed 5th and MacAfee placed 10th. Bitdefender ranked #1.
https://www.usnews.com/360-reviews/antivirus/best-antivirus-softwareI have a both Macs and a PC, and use Bitdefender on each. I also use Malwarebytes, which detects other forms of malware.
Several years ago the free version of Malwarebytes resurrected my PC which had become infected with a virus that rendered the PC nearly inoperable, that Macafee had not prevented despite having been regularly updated. I gladly thanked Malwarebytes by purchasing their paid version.
I had Norton on my Macs for years. Comcast gave it to customers for free. I moved and Comcast does not give me Norton with their cable and wi fi service. So that said I could not use Norton didnt want to pay their price so i just trashed everything Norton on my computers. Norton will not leave me alone. They have a huge pop-up
all day long telling me to go through their process to terminate and need access to my computer. I read up and they said Norton will leave things one your computer that you dont want. So it is still poping up 4 or 5 times a day. I switched to Soros after researching and like it. Norton appears to be an aggresive company.

I don't trust any of them - they used to send their code to Russia for code verification so they could sell there - this was pretty much all the software companies - Norton, Mcafee, Microsoft and HPE (cyber defense software that is used by the Pentagon to guard its computer networks), just to name a few. Microsoft even sent Windows7 as open source to Russia. So they have the basic code structure and logic that the companies are using - not a stretch to figure out why there were so many "hacks" a few years ago...
Supposedly this all stopped in 2017, but if there's money involved ???

Norton makes a real pain of themselves if you ever decide to stop sending money to them.
They're both a pain in the a** and neither do what they are hipped to do. If you are careful and watch what you open you don't need anything. Avast has for years been rated the number one free antivirus program but they you put up with the nagging to get the paid version. I use Malware Bytes who put back my computer in working order when I got careless and opened something I shouldn't have. It runs in the background and I don't even know it. If I run it manually it slows everything down but when I just let it do it's thing it's good.
Thanks for the replies, very revealing....

You are right on all counts. Back in the day Norton was a viable security option but not so much anymore. I could tell they were starting to get a little desperate about the time Microsoft introduced windows 10. A large influx of renewal notices sorta proved that.
I have used Bitdefender for a few years, and it works well for me.
Protects three Mac Computers, an iPad, and to iPhones...
Never had an issue with it...
Just my two pennies worth.

The Optimizer is also very useful. It cleans up my computer when it slows down, doing what scammers used to charge fifty bucks to do.
