Please answer the following Riddle/Puzzle using (PM) Private Mail and type NORTH POLE on your answer; I’m still receiving answers from the first puzzle I posted! If you don’t, I may not see your note.
People on this website are located all over the world and that made me think of this puzzle.

An old riddle runs as follows. An explorer walks one mile due south, turns and walks one mile due east, turns again and walks one mile due north. He finds himself back where he started. He shoots a bear. What color is the bear?
The time-honored answer is: “White”, because the explorer must have started at the North Pole. But some time ago someone made the discovery that the North Pole is not the only starting point that satisfies the given conditions! Can you think of any other spot on the globe from which one could walk a mile south, a mile east, a mile north and find themselves back at the original location?

For the purposes of this problem “The Earth” is perfectly round and solid, and can be walked upon anywhere you choose. Because of time differences, I will post the correct answer on Tuesday morning, July 14th at approximately 10 AM on the east coast of the United States. I will not list the first to answer correctly because of the time differences but I will list all those who come up with the correct answer. Good luck to all.

If you start one mile north of the South Pole and walk one mile south, you will find yourself at the South Pole. From that point, how do you walk east?

Every time a post is published, those members who are following this thread get a notification - myself included. The less posts on this thread the better ... until after the answer is posted. It wastes my time and I need a lot to keep up with the PM's.

THE PUZZLE QUESTION: “Can you think of any other spot on the globe from which one could walk a mile south, a mile east, a mile north and find themselves back at the original location?”
THE ANSWER: Start from any location one mile north of the latitude that has a circumference of one mile.
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN: Latitudes are imaginary lines running around the earth that are parallel to the equator (GOOGLE it for further info). The equator has the largest circumference and as you move away from the equator, the circumferences become smaller. One of these latitudes, toward the bottom of our globe, has a circumference of one mile. If you start from a point one mile north of this latitude and walk south for one mile you will reach this latitude. Since it has a circumference of one mile, walking east around it will bring you back to where you started. Now you simply walk one mile north and you will be back at your original location.
For a visual explanation, pick up and hold any golf ball, baseball, basketball, soccer ball, etc.. Visualize the equator and then the lines of latitude.
I did get some interesting notes involving mountains, compass headings, continental shifting, measuring distances, and the color of the bear. One final piece of information … Polar bears live in the arctic; Penguins live in the Antarctic (see attachments).
CORRECT ANSWERS WERE SENT IN BY THE FOLLOWING HOGGS: rmalarz , JamesCurran , DaveC , tairving , DirtFarmer , Shellback , CobblestoneLane , jayluber , bcplimpton , DononIL , ezmark .
I hope you watch for my next (and last) puzzle coming tomorrow at 8AM (22 hours from now). It will be a poker puzzle. Poker, the card game. It will not be difficult.

Make a 90 degree turn to your left and start walking.
