I enjoyed these very much! I do have a question for you or other naturalists on UHH. In the last picture of TH dragon fly there is a structure in front of the compound eyes that has two small spots on it. Are these additional eyes or other sense organs?

Thanks,
Bill

Those are the insects secondary eyes called the 'Ocelli'. The ocellus can generate no image information. However it is very sensitive to low levels of light and to changes in light intensity; scientists believe that the ocelli are useful in allowing the insect to detect the horizon, to respond quickly to changes in light intensity.

Gary, you have created some gorgeous images here. I am so glad you are out and about again shooting in the field. The Dragon composition in compelling. Well done.

Thanks, Brenda. A few things were keeping me in and now that I can be turned loose it happens to be brutally hot here however things always tend to work out when given the chance.

Very nice set!! I especially like the last one of the dragon. Great on DL! I'm sure glad I moved from Florida to a place where there are no chiggers and very few if any mosquitoes.

Thanks, I shot these with the Nikon 200mm f/4 macro which is why the backgrounds are so buttery.

Thanks, Mark. It will take a few outings to get familiar with the new camera. The controls are much like my other one so I know where everything is by feel so no issues there. The Z6 mirrorless has a highlighting systems for focus and my macro lenses work manually so hitting the peak of the focus highlighting is where I need the practice. One thing that it does do is show how much I move. Oh my.

I got a hodgepodge of shots. Not culled.
One unusual find. A Cow Killer looked to be stinging monarch caterpillars.
Hoping those shots are clear. Tomorrow.
Can't remember where we parked, no one else there.
Goodnight, Doc, all.
Bill

Went out to my favorite boggy area this morning with camera in hand. Most of the water has gone down and the burst of wildflowers were few compared to times past however there are hopes that they will return and attract more critters. I sprayed and doused so I came home tick and chigger free which is the best part of the outing.

Nicely done.
