Shootings soar 205 percent after NYPD disbands anti-crime unit

Gun violence exploded across the city after the NYPD disbanded its anti-crime unit of plainclothes cops on June 15, with three times as many shootings in the last two weeks of the month over the same period in 2019, police stats show.

And the shocking rise in gunfire — to 116 incidents from 38 between June 15 and July 2, a 205 percent increase — meant scores more victims were hurt or k**led by bullets this year over last year.

Gunshot injuries skyrocketed to 157 from 47 in 2019, a 238 percent increase.

With a total of 205 shootings during the month, it was the bloodiest June in 24 years — going back to 1996, when the NYPD logged 236 incidents, the department said.

One victim, Jomo Glasgow, 35, a DJ, was gunned down outside a house party on East 49th Street in Brooklyn on June 17 — just two days after Police Commissioner Dermot Shea announced he was scrapping the unit, a group of 600 officers tasked with preventing violent street crime.

“I feel like we are giving the streets back to the criminals,” Glasgow’s mom, Hazel Thomas, told The Post.

“They shouldn’t have disbanded it,” she said of the anti-crime unit. “Wh**ever the problem they have, address it. But don’t disband the unit. Many lives would have been saved. Not just my son.”

The unit, once described as “elite” by Mayor Bill de Blasio, has a history of success but also controversy.

Its members have been involved in a number of high-profile police shootings and deaths, including the chokehold that k**led Eric Garner.

Shea described the group as a relic of the stop-and-frisk era, though he also praised plainclothes cops for “doing exactly what was asked of them.”

“They have done an exceptional job,” he said during the announcement. “But again I think it’s time to move forward and change how we police in this city.”

Enlarge ImageNew York Post cover for Monday, June 30, 2020.But some saw his decision, which came during the height of the protests against police brutality, as politically motivated.

And potentially catastrophic to crime-fighting.

“Without having this tool, it will be much harder to tackle rising felony crimes, ‘shots fired’ jobs and the growing number of illegal guns pouring into the neighborhoods,” said NYPD Sgt. Joseph Imperatrice, a former anti-crime unit supervisor and founder of Blue L***s M****r.

He said members were “disheartened” by the announcement.

The NYPD has blamed the shooting spike on everything but the disbanding of the anti-crime unit.

“It’s bail reform,” Shea said on PIX11 this week. “It’s C***D. It’s emptying out prisons. One of the most frustrating pieces right now is a criminal justice system that just is not working and I’m calling on Albany to fix it. Fix it now. People are dying on the streets of New York City.”

De Blasio — who as recently as 2015 described the anti-crime unit as “elite” — has remained silent on it being dissolved. But when shootings started to climb last month, he vowed that “we are not going to allow gun violence to continue to grow in this city.”

“We’re not going to go back to the days when there was so much violence pervading our communities,” Hizzoner told CBS 2 on June 22, following a week of 53 shootings. But the next week there were 63 more shootings.

The group was an outgrowth of the Street Crimes Unit, which was formed in 1971 to target high-crime zones and made 4,000 arrests that year. The Street Crimes Unit was disbanded in 2002 following the fatal shooting of Amadou Diallo — and a federal probe that found the unit profiled people of color.

“The problem got much worse over the next 10 years,” Darius Charney, of the Center for Constitutional Rights, told the New York Times.

NYC deserves this 100%.
They have been supporting the democrats for a long time.
Even the police union is in the pocket of the democrats so police have no legitimate complaint at all. They also are 100% pro democrat and union and have been for decades.
They are now reaping the fruits of their corruption.
NO sympathy at all. Keep supporting democrats and this is the ultimate result.

De Blasio is responsible and has no respect for police. He has no clue how great it is to have a strong police force, which would clear up this crime wave.

That is what I am hoping across the nation.
The result of democrat policies are beginning to show and it is NOT a pretty future, imagine if they win the presidency they will definitely win the senate and have 2 years to cement their power indefinitely to rule and reign over America,

Can't even begin to imagine that. There are too many internet articles and comments on how terrible the left is with the B*M, the r**ts, the burning of businesses, A****a, murders, crooked Democrat government, inner city strife and defunding police. Nope, not only will Trump win, Trump will win BIG.

Before Rudy took over the city was among the most dangerous cities. It was a cesspool. I worked there, trust me. Rudy made the city into one of the safest cities. And Blumberg kept it that way. To his credit he did a great job. The city flurished. It was one the most liveable place in thye country. I worked there. I
m a NY City native. It was a terrific place. It was the capital of the world. The Big Apple was a polite place, The best restaurant city in the country. Them DiBlasio came in. It is now back to the way it was before Juliani took office. I am so greatful I no longer work there. I am glad I don't live anywhere near the City I once loved.

I agree.
I used to go there and felt safe in the streets and parks with my camera.
Now seeing people just randomly being shot, NO way.
We were going to take a photo walking trip this summer. Now we are not going anywhere near any of these democrat cities.

I wouldn't be caught dead (bad choice of that word) with expensive gear in the City.Certain words that originated in the City are used (wrongly) to apply to other cities locations. DOWNTOWN pertains to the part of the City below 14 th street. nNo other city really has a Downtown. Uptown as well. Only the City has a subway. There may be other city but Only Manhattan is properly called THE CITY. Even the OUTER BOROUGHS-Bronx, Queens, The Bronx, Staten island, although technically the are part of new york, city are notpart of THE CITY. And even more importantly only new york city and it;s environs have decent Pizza. And no other place in whole of the country can make a decent bagel. Or even know what a real DELI is. I do believe that I am just a touch biased

I am not that familiar with the terms, never lived there, but have been all around the area doing Architecture projects.
No more though.
I decline all work now in these democrat infested areas.
Last one I did was to redesign the CVS that was burned down in Baltimore in the r**ts a few years ago.

When a person goes after one spelling that tell you that the person has only one way to attack is to degrade the other person. What did I do in the Bronx DA's Office? Help victim of crime understand how NYPD and DA's office work, find out if their need anything ( food, to get home, a safe place to go if their can't go home. Get medical help if their need it.) I was doing this working 4 to 12 Mon. to Fri. so I did not have a lot of back up. My office was where every I was standing. As for polices checking to see that their had the right paper work for the DA. At any give night I would have ten to fifteen victims and 20 to 30 cops. So over the years I had a very good under standing of the inner works of NYPD and Bronx DA's Office and what your would call "the inner city".
So what did you do?
