My wife and I went for a walk thru a city park and happened upon some dragonflies. First time photographing them because I never see any.

Ok. How about telling us how to tell the difference between a damselfly and a dragon fly. I love the shot. Well done.

The best visual difference is that a damselfly, at rest, has the wings facing back and parallel to the body. A dragonfly has the wings perpendicular or angled slightly forward toward the head.

Isn’t life and UHH wonderful. No matter how bad things look there a joyful sole willing to help teach those interested something new. It’s another great day and I’ve learned something new already this morning. Thanks. Now I’ve got to look back at the photos I took on my phone while kayaking on the upper reaches of the WI River to see if they were Damselfly's or Dragon Flys. Have a great day.

What you have here Jim is a Female Ebony Jewelwing damselfly (Calopteryx maculata). It's a great shot.

Basically you’re correct ... but there are a few damselflies that don’t bring their wings back to it’s abdomen when at rest. Another difference is the head. The damselfly’s eyes are separated by It’s head whereas the dragonfly’s eyes surround it’s head.
