I'd try doing all your edits in PS and THEN applying Sharpen AI to the exported result. I would use Sharpen AI as a stand alone program to make sure PS doesn't try to sabotage the result.

Full disclosure - I do not use PS and never will. But the results I get with Sharpen AI blow me away.

Cheers

I disagree. I find that doing Sharpen or Denoise early in the editing gets me better results.

Well, the OP is not having much luck that way so I'd say it is worth a try.

Cheers

I do use PS, but sparingly. I am being sort of blown away by what Topaz seems to be doing also. I'm going to print some large prints to see if the improvement holds up in print.

So you do it first? I actually did it both ways in my testing yesterday and today. I can't see that it made much difference, actually. But I do have a question: If I have sharpened with Topaz, do I sharpen again on export from LR?

Humm. Could you elaborate a bit more?

Thanks. Please see my earlier posting a few messages higher.

If you are going to print a really large picture you might want to try Topaz Gigapixel, which does allow free trial downloads.

Or, sharpen a picture in Sharpen AI and then crop it heavily and print only a small part of the frame.

Cheers

Good idea to enlarge, crop, and print the crop. Thanks.

On my use mostly of DeNoise, I crop to close to my final size before exporting from lightroom to DeNoise or Sharpen. It really speeds up the final processing of the Topaz product and I don't really need the part I'm not using processed. By cropping in Lightroom, I can always re-crop and reprocess.

That's a good idea. Thanks.

Yes, that is the one thing I usually do before I use Topaz. If I’m still unsure of a final crop I might do a loose crop to cut down the size. Also, if you’re using Topaz as plugins from raw, make sure that it’s opening as a 16 bit TIF. If you’re editing JPEGs it’s only 8 bits anyway.

At first, I was testing it on exported images. The ones I posted here were worked in Topaz directly on the RAW image, then opened in LR. On most of them that I worked in Topaz, no further LR work was needed.

I thought you might have jinxed my Topaz Denoise this morning. I was having the same problem with the standalone version. I would edit it and save the image but the saved image did not contain any of the Topaz adjustments. I found it worked as it should once i closed Adobe Photoshop even though the images were no longer active in PS for some reason it was impacting the ability to save the edits in the standalone Topaz program. I had not experienced this before. So now I close PS before starting Topaz standalone. I wonder if your Lightroom is causing the same issue for you with SharpenAI if its running in the background

Sounds flaky to me...I suspect there is something else going on. I have used Topaz plugins for years now with various versions of Lightroom and Photoshop and have never experienced anything like you describe yet. I have seen issues with loss of EXIF data on the returned photo from Topaz in older versions, but never lost the Topaz edits on return.

BTW - I use all the Topaz products as plugins to both Lightroom & Photoshop, I don’t bother with using them standalone.

I never thought of that. My most recent attempts have been through the plug in.
