I only have the 200-500. I just watched the Steve Perry vid and as usual, you probably can’t get a more thorough discussion. My only issues with the 200-500 are the size and AF speed. But for wildlife, especially birds, 300mm doesn’t cut it. So you’d likely always have a TC in place. It’s still smaller than the 200-500, but you lose the extra stop. And then there’s the $600...

The 300mm on the D500 (or any Nikon DX) has a crop factor of 450mm good enough for birds it is F4 so by adding a TC 1.4 you increase the crop factor to 630mm and still get a f5.6.

I am in love with my Nikon 200-500mm. I have never felt that the quality I wanted was missing from shots I have taken. Theoretically and maybe if you are printing 30 by 40 there's a difference but for my purposes I have what I need.

I have the 300mm PF, and my wife has the 200-500mm. I use both, borrowing hers when the 300mm is not enough. But I often use the 300mm with a 1.4x teleconverter with good results.

Exactly. So you get just shy of 500mm, with no aperture advantage and no focal length versatility. Seems to me the only plus for the 300 is size and probably AF speed.

As well as weight saving for hand holding.

I watched the Steve Perry video comparing the two lenses and although he was very thorough he appeared to me to favor the 300 PF. All your comments are appreciated and gave some good info. I am leaning toward either keeping both or keeping the 300 PF and using the 1.4 with it. When I get time to really put both lenses through their paces I will have a better idea. I would give up the 200-500 immediately for the 500 PF but financially I can't afford it right now and even if I could this lens is in very short supply. Thanks again for your input and by all means don't stop the replies. BTW I posted this question on the "Advice from the pros" section of UHH and only received one reply.

The photo is the 500mm PF mounted on the D850 hand held. I love this lens, also works great on the D500.

Thanks for the pic. and good replies. Somewhere in the future, I see me owning a 500 PF.

Thanks for all the great replys! So I have had to make a hard decision. I am going to give up the 200-500 and shoot with the 300 PF and use the TC-1.4x when needed. If your interested, I am going to post the 200-500 on UHH. Thanks again and good shooting to all.
