RIGHT NOW, AND IT PROBABLY WON’T BE TRUE MUCH LONGER, DELTA IS THE ONLY AIRLINE FLYING WITH THE MIDDLE SEAT OPEN

I have United flights booked and in !st class you're sitting next to no one unless you ask to sit near a companion. They are still booking center seats and limiting the number of passengers in general boarding. What a joke.

For me, the risk of getting COVID was the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back. I’ll never fly again.

Not much different than going to a grocery store if you're paranoid. It is important that you feel comfortable with your decision.

As both a physician and a business traveler, I have chosen NOT to fly for a number of reasons.

First, your travel is not just in the plane, but your risk of exposure begins as you enter the airport. These are areas of high concentration and the obvious risk of contamination is ever present. Plus you must come into physical contact with surfaces such as baggage belts at TSA checkpoints, chairs, etc. where you cannot guarantee they are properly sanitized to protect you and others. While airports do look to maintain social distancing, it is easier said than done especially when boarding and deplaning.

Airlines are in the business of making money and not keeping you safe from contracting an illness. As an example, AA recently announced they will no longer keep the middle seat open to lower the risk of contamination. Yes, you must wear a mask and no food will be served, however as most flights are turned around in a short period of time, you have to decide if the airplane you will be flying on for perhaps upwards of 3+ hrs heading to Florida will provide you with adequate protection against a disease with a high probability of airborne and contact contamination. Once you land you still have to walk through high-concentration spaces to leave the airport and claim you bags. And finally, you most likely have to rent a car or take a cab/Uber which can further increase your risk of exposure.

In my own situation, we had a large family event planned for late August in S. Florida. The host took the decision to cancel the celebration and to move the date so that the actual ceremony could be seen on ZOOM by family and friends. No one has complained and most have actually thanked the hosts for recognizing that maintaining one's health is more important than a 4-hr gathering.

Hopefully by winter things will return to normal (or whatever normal will be) however FL is experiencing an explosion of COVID-19 and when you factor the reality that we still have to contend with a Flu outbreak beginning in the Fall, you may want to plan otherwise. In any case, please stay healthy and just be smart to protect both you and your loved ones.

I totally agree with all you said but would add the air one breathes on the plane is constantly being recycled. Don't know if some how it is being "cleansed". I'm guessing my out-breath a few minutes ago is your in-breath a bit later.

Would not fly right now if tickets were free. I live in Florida and it MIGHT be better in the winter but you don't want to be here now. Getting 8,000 to 10,000 cases per day and no end in sight. Our great governor has his head in the beach sand among other places!

What is the difference between American and Asian airlines??

United Airlines really really sucks, and will taint you.
I just flew from LAX to PHL and back, and they did it again.
The LAX flight was @ 40 minutes late. They didn't say. They finally announce boarding.
As I'm boarding, angry frazzled women- "You're boarding the wrong flight!"
THAT flight was waiting for some VIPs to show up, then take off. OUR plane- was waiting.
That fight takes off. Our plane shows up. Needs cleaning. Missing an attendant.
We board. We wait. Not our turn. Ho hum. Wheels up- two hours after boarding.
We stop in Chicago. We wait our turn. Notta lotta to see in the airport. Naptime.
Finally, we board. We take off. Aholes do it again- the engines are out of synch.
It's cheaper to throttle back one side in crosswinds- but the plane has a nasty vibration.
We're landing. "Please stay in your seats until ... bla bla bla." We land.
People up and grabbing luggage. I look outside, and this ain't Philly. Bat rasterds- again!
We're in Pittsburgh. De-ice and a rinse. No notice. Angry frazzled woman- "Get back in your seats!"
Grumpy people pack and sit. We wait. Not our turn. Ho hum. Wheels up- two+ hours later.
Passengers ask. No meals on short flights! I got a cookie- one before Chicago, one after Pitts.
We land. In Philly. Kids and grandkids waiting. Laughing. They've been following our flight.
United notices didn't match the airports'. Passengers on Facebook, etc. "What!?!? PITTSburgh?!?!
It took just under eighteen hours. Rod Serling was getting nervous.

I have a Corps discount card, which ends up @ half price fares compared to decent flights.
I wouldn't do this to my family or friends, but just for me. I'm tough!
I was flying round trip United every week for work, for a few years. A few days to a week stay.
EVERY trip had a story. Most not this bad. Some worse.

First, I hope you are healthy and thanks for serving your patients in what is surely a difficult environment. I used to work at ORMC and Jackson and still consult all the way from Baptist up the coast and all I hear are the horror stories of full ICUs, patients becoming ill in SNFs and ALFs and let's not even discuss the bars along A1A. Even as far back as March when they cancelled HIMSS in Orlando, the writing was on the wall that Florida was going to be a hot spot for COVID as time went on.
I would not want to be a doc in FL now. just hope you, your colleagues and everyone involved in patient care come out of this OK.
Best of luck and stay healthy - Jeff G

With this dangerous Covid19 wreaking havoc on the Airline industry, I wanted to ask my fellow U.H.H. opinions, and if any, experiences on a recent fight in the U.S.
Question for you is; did you feel confident that the airline took adequate precautions to protect their flying? customers. What precautions did you observe or were lacking?
I am hoping to be able to fly to Florida for a vacation sometime this winter.

Flew to Vegas June 21, return June 27, Southwest had middle seat open.
Wore mask throughout the flight with only water and a snack.
Crew was great and plane was exceptionally clean, masks are drag especially on long flights. Vegas was only about 1/3 capacity with lots of gamblers

You think you had a bum flight, take a look at all the people left at the gate when you boarded, those are standbys and are the last to board if seats are available, sometimes those people may spend two to three days of a vacation in the airport trying to get a flight to their destination and it is the same on the return flights. I have head passengers in first class make snide remarks about people getting there on time to board the flight and I so wanted to tell that individual that we were lucky to get seats because we were standbys

Most of the scenarios you painted are caused by the passengers making impossible demands on the airline employees. I must also remind you that you are responsible for knowing which flight you are supposed to be on and the scanner can make mistakes, you also need to be in the boarding area 20 minutes prior just incase there is a last minute gate change or a change in schedule due to aircraft or aircraft availability.

By the way standby passengers are not eligible for Hotels, meal vouchers etc., that is an added expense for the standby passenger. Standbys are also not eligible when they are asking people to give up there seats for a price in an over booking situation since standbys do not have a confirmed seat.

Yes people do not listen to the announcements of the flight crew, especially when they are asking people to remain seated to allow those with a connecting flight to disembark first, it is all about me, and no body else matters. If you show courtesy and kindness you will receive the same in return, but if you insist on being rude and impossible you may find yourself at the end of a long line or talking to the airport authorities.

The airlines are NOT doing fine! The billions they got only covered about 2/3's of their operating costs to begin with and passenger numbers are at 5% of a year ago. They are losing millions every day. How do I know? My son is a furloughed United Pilot.

I believe that the house of representives voted for the bailout.
The house of representatives is more than 50% democratic.
So you should actually say the money that the Democrats gave the airline industry.

Democrats agree on 'big immediate action' to back U.S. airline industry

So please blame the Democrats not Trump!

Currently Florida is one of the worst destinations due to their Covid-19 problem which is getting worse daily.

In my opinion.

I totally agree. I feel that they ( U.S.,state, County, local Government Authorities) do not presently, nor have they done in the past, taken this Pandemic seriously, they were and still are more concerned with keeping the economy thriving, Businesses Opened, etc. Then all of a sudden they realize, "This is getting worse, we need to do something more." But by then, Covid19 had overtaken their meager efforts to control it or possiblty eradicate it. My personal Opinion. Granted some places are worse, I think it might be due to larger Population areas, that it spreads faster and easier.
