Hi, rstrick2,
Having had some experience with fishers in my wildlife disease studies I am most curious where you made these images. Florida is well outside the range of this species. Also am curious as to the graffiti on the tree trunk. Was this in a populated area? Are these images in fact of a wild, or of a captive or tamed fisher ? Sorry, just gotta ask!

I don't think a fisher is a cat, ferret or weasel family I think.

Excellent shots! I used to hear them in the surrounding woods when I lived on the South Shore of MA, however, I never saw one until I moved to the hills of VT. The first time I heard one I was convinced that a woman was being attacked in the woods. It is definitely a spooky, hair raising, sound.

I saw one here in Chelsea (!). They love the squirrels.

I do like thes environmental portraits of this species.

Here is a link to a thread I posted some years ago that includes a portrait of a recently captured fisher, to the enclosure of which I was granted access for photography. The fisher is a medium sized member of the weasel family (Mustelidae) and is the northern North American counterpart of the North Asian sable.

I live trap fisher several times a yr they will eat about anything mostly squirrels and seem to love cats. I picture of my younger Son Jon with a big male 20+ lbs and me with a live trapped fisher I relocate 95% of all critters we catch.

We have a colony (infestation is a better word) in the wetlands near us. They are aggressive, ugly, mean, and make a terrifying shrieking sound at night. If I had a shotgun I’d blow every one of those little shits to smitherines.

What makes even less sense is that the Toronto Blue Jays Baseball team chose to locate their Double A minor league team 18 miles from us in Manchester NH and named the team the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. I’ll stay faithful to my Red Sox and root for the Portland Sea Dogs (Red Sox Double A team).

After seeing a fisher cat early one morning near the house, I realized that if and when I got a cat, it would have to be an indoor cat. We lived in the hills in central VT and because of the fisher cats and coyotes, our cat stayed indoors for 18 years. The coyotes were so big that I made sure our miniature horse was in his stall every night as a couple of coyotes could have taken him down quite easily as they were almost as big as he was.

Great captures. They have an interesting name since they aren't cats and they don't catch fish. Go figure!

I have never seen one in the wild.....only on TV nature shows. Weasels are rare as well but I have seen maybe two(?) in my life time....also nearly NEVER.

Nice catch sir. Lucky you.
