I find the manual focus on the sx40 a waste of time. Auto focus seems to do the job and quicker. What"s your opinion? if it works for you on what occasions?

I have an older sx20 and the manual focus is basically worthless. What I do when I don't want the focus to change is set it on auto, focus then go on manual focus. I do this when shooting panos on the gigapan.

If it had a much finer manual adjustment it would be a huge improvement.

I find the same thing shooting with my D5100...I have a hard time manual focusing. The problem is there are times auto focus won't work. I also have a couple of lenses that aren't able to auto focus with the D5100 at all. There doesn't seem to be any manual focus assist in the lens. In my old Nikon FG the view was split in the viewfinder. You knew you were focused when the upper half of the view was aligned with the bottom half. This was very fast and acurate. Are there any lenses with visual aids like that? That would make manual focusing better for me for sure!

The split image is not in the lens but the viewfinder screen. Check katzeye.com for a screen that fits your camera.

Auto focus works remarkably well on just about any camera. Of course, the camera has to know what the subject is.

I was referring to manual focus on sx40 not the nikon d5100 which is a dslr camera as the sx40 is a fancy point and shoot camera.. Thanks for your answer anyway!

I do sympathize with you on the manual focus, that is what happened to me I got all blank photographs I was very annoyed as it seems to be a camera for children who know no better than to use automatic instead of knowing about manual focus. I understand from all the reviews of the SX50 that it has been better aspects that the SX40, I will wait until the knowledgible review writers has had a chance to test the SX50 when it comes out.

candy, i think you are referring to the manual setting vs the auto setting on this camera. You can auto focus on most of these settings and use manual focus too. refer to page 93 in canon manual for manual focus..Good luck! The sx40 is a great camera and i have taken several great pictures with it. The sx50 looks nice with 50x optical zoom which is just unbelievable. It has the ability to shoot in Raw format:has the ability to shoot with a wired remote, and the lens will zoom out faster then the sx40. But the fstop only goes down to a minimum of 3.6 and you lose an fstop or two in the higher zoom factors.

Auto-focus works best on the SX40. The only time I've used manual focus is to set it to infinity, for taking pics of an eclipse. It's a PITA, to say the least. But it's nice to have, when you absolutely need it.

I have a '30, and it's vestigial, almost nonexistent. I tried moon shots just under infinity, but was not happy with the result. Does the '40 still use the function dial for manual focusing? I get a function almost every time - worst idea for a combo dial Ever ! The good news is, the autofocus is quite good, and you can lock it & recompose. For the money, you can't get much better manual control and span of lens length.

I have a question please. When the auto focus refuses to focus and you don't have a manual focus; you are just out of luck right???

Sorry guy I still live here but I am still English.

Cannot understand why some cruelest Amercan neighbor cuts down my wonderful vine she let her gardener destroy my beautiful flowering vine, I care nothing about living here now, I want to go home, I never want to hurt anyone, but she is just nasty.
