"Death by Chocolate" is one of the Flavors of the Week at Stewart's. I thought any "Death" flavor was an odd choice given the current situation, but I guess it better than death by Covid. I'm not that crazy about chocolate, so I got three other flavors.

If you're not familiar with the Flavor of the Month program, it's a good deal. You get a full half gallon - not just three pints - for only $3.39. Have you priced an ice cream cone lately? True, it's not 100% natural, like Breyer's, but it is a lower-cost alternative.

The restaurant I frequent has an intense chocolate cake that when I order it, I call it the "Death by Chocolate" cake. I am a sweets-aholic and even this cake is very rich to me. It usually takes me 2 days to finish the slice.

Enjoy your ice cream...I bought Bryers chocolate yesterday.

except for its flagship Vanilla Bean, Mint Chocolate Chip, Chocolate and Strawberry flavors, Breyers doesn't use enough milk or cream to call them ice cream. All but those four flavors are called "Frozen Dairy Dessert" on the package. The brand was owned by Kraft Foods from 1926 until 1993, when Unilever bought it.

Unilever reformulated many of its flavors with crap ingredients, significantly changing the taste and texture of their products as a result. Breyers' list of ingredients has expanded to include thickeners, low-cost sweeteners, food coloring and low-cost additives — including natural additives such as tara gum and carob bean gum; artificial additives such as maltodextrin and propylene glycol; and common artificially separated and extracted ingredients such as corn syrup, whey, and others. Even cheap store brand ice cream tastes better IMHO.

The best ice cream I have had recently came from a dairy that a friend of mine runs. In my opinion, the best tasting ice cream has a high fat content. You can estimate the quality from the ease or difficulty of scooping the ice cream when it's cold. Ice cream with a high fat content is moderately easy to scoop, even out of our chest freezer (0F or below compared to the fridge freezer (~20F), while the ice milk is more ice and less cream so it's like trying to take a scoop out of a block of ice. My personal favorite flavor is french vanilla.

Unfortunately I moved away so my friend's dairy is now a 3 hour drive each way. Haven't found anything equivalent here.

I tried a Ben and Jerry's non dairy Cherry Garcia by accident and I'll swear that stuff will be served in heaven. You would never know it's not dairy.

To me, the best ice cream out there these days is Blue Bell. Not only does it taste great, but they aren't skimpy with the fruit or nuts or chocolate chips – and they are the only ones I know of that still gives you a full half gallon!

I have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, so I quit eating ice cream. But Culvers does have a ice cream substitute that once a month or so satisfies some of my cravings. I think they call it frozen custard, but it works for me.

Then I feel better about not buying it. What really annoyed me was reducing the size of the package. I'm glad that some companies still sell half gallons.

Let's give a shout out for Blue Bunny ice cream from the Ice Cream Capital of the world, Le Mars, Iowa. A great ice cream, and a great company (family owned).

Jerry, I like trying new flavors also. When I'm out running about trying to find something interesting to photograph I'll at times pass a local ice cream shop to see what new-to-me flavor they might have. A couple of years ago I was in New Hope, PA (about 45 min. south of the Lehigh Valley). It is an interesting little town of artists and touristy shops and eateries. There is an ice cream shop on main street, up a few steps to a brightly colored blue store front. I stopped in and looked over their menu and selected a sea salt caramel laced vanilla and then asked the lady behind the counter if she could recommend something different. She said although it was not on the menu, she currently had the Elvis Presley. It was banana flavored ice cream with ribbons of chocolate and peanut-butter. It was wonderful! Last year I visited the shop again and they did not have it.
