New Apple Old Lightroom

I have been reading about the difficulties with LR6 and the new Mac OS.Unfortunately my 4 yr old Mac book pro had a fatal accident. I purchased a new Mac book pro with Catalina OS 10.15 and LR6 actually seemed to work. Then it upgraded to 10.15.5. Now it won’t open. It just winks at me for a millisecond and closes. So I assume unless anyone out there uses LR6 with OS 10.15.5 I will move on to LRCC. My photos are on an external drive. I understand any editing becomes saved in the new catalog which can only be interpreted by LRCC. Any one out there using CC with OS 10.15.5? Can I install LRCC on a second computer? How do save a second copy of the original catalog? CC is the non cloud version (?)and I have never used PS before ..Any Suggestions ?
Thanks for any remarks or warnings

Yes, Lr will run on 10.15.5 as I have that latest OS on my iMac PRO, along with the latest version of Lr and all runs fine. Yes, I believe, that Lr will convert your old catalog file when you open it. Yes, you can install Lr on a second computer. Using the same catalog for both copies can be done, but you could easily end up with different versions of images on each. CC is NOT the cloud version, unless you do some other stuff. I suggest you go slow and learn. There are many good tutorials for Lr, including some for free. You will LOVE the new features. Best of luck.

I'm not a Lightroom expert, but my understanding is that if you want to keep two copies of Lightroom Classic (that's the non-cloud version with the new [LrC] icon) on two computers "in sync", you need to put the catalog file on a shared external hard drive, i.e. a network drive. You would presumably also keep the photos on the same network volume, or another shared hard drive, so everything is accessible to both computers.

I'm not sure if there might be problems if you use both machines at the same time, but that's probably not your intent anyway.

If anyone sees anything wrong in the above, please enlighten us! :-)

No. Don't do that. Take the subscription and use "Lightroom Classic". It will have the workflow you are used to and will automatically update your catalog without destroying your old one.

Lightroom CC is a new more "mobile" editing program. You will get it with the subscription but it will be a major change to your workflow. As you move forward with the subscription you will find good ways to use Lightroom CC with Lightroom Classic.

Lightroom CC keeps your images on Adobe Servers. Therefore you can work with them from as many devices you can find that are connected to the internet. Lightroom Classic (like the one you are used to) can be used on two computers. There is NOTHING purposefully built into Lightroom Classic to make it a multi user system. All efforts at that are user invented tricks. One such trick is to put the catalog on an external drive with the photo files but that normally slows it down a lot.

--> "I have never used PS before "

With the upgrade to the current Lightroom Classic you will find less need for Photoshop. But, since it is included in the subscription, it has several things it can do better than Lightroom. My favorite is the removal of ugly tourists in my travel photos.

LR CC and LR Classic CC both have a setting that allows you to only save your photos to local drives and not use the cloud. I never use cloud storage for anything. Instead, everything is on a system were both primary and backup storage reside on 32Tb of storage including offsite storage of backup drives in my bank safe deposit box.

You should be aware that Adobe has changed the names of their photographic offerings AGAIN!

Great products, great support, great value and awful marketing.

This is what you get for your $10 US in the Photography subscription plan:

LrC - Lightroom Classic (9.3 at the latest update 6/16/2020) - This is the continuation of Lr 6 you have. Now updated every few months. You would get the familiar continuation of Lightroom with quite a number of enhancements that include operation with modern 64 bit operating systems and performance improvement. Forget the CC, Cloud Crap. It is the real computer version although it plays well with the mobile version now called LR.

Lr - Lightroom (current version 6/16/2020 update) - This is the mobile/cloud version. Haven’t tried it and given the frustration I get from Apple iOS devices I probably won’t.

PS - Photoshop (6/16/2020 update) - Two versions of Photoshop. One for a real computer and another for mobile devices. The first is the latest version of the full PS. The other is, well, mobile I suppose.

Br - Bridge - An organization program I suppose someone uses.

Two more programs I ignore.

And a small amount of cloud storage for some marketing purpose. I don’t use.

Under your license you can install a copy of each program on as many machines as you desire. However, only two copies can be active at the same time.

If you install the latest version of LR and try to open a LR 6 catalog LR will ask if you want to convert the catalog to the current version. If you agree (recommended) it will do so and you will up and running. It leaves your old catalog as it was.

I'm running OS10.15.5 on my iMac, and the latest LrC runs perfectly. I can't help with the uninstaller, so calling the suggested help line is certainly the best way to resolve that problem.

When you start the new LrC, it should automagically find and link to your existing catalog. If not, you should be able to use the File > Open Catalog command to point it to your catalog.

Your problem is that the Catalina OS is a 64-bit program and is not compatible with 32-bit software. I have a computer that is part of my editing system that I have not yet upgraded from Mojave for that exact reason. If you have already upgraded and did not save your old OS system to a disk or other media before you upgraded to Catalina, you will not be able to go back to Mojave. If that is the case, you are out of luck and will need to upgrade your software.

I could not get along with Lightroom without the aid of the book written by the Lightroom Queen. https://www.lightroomqueen.com
