OK I am in love with this. It's tack sharp, the B/W conversation is amazing. Wonderful job.
Wow! Now that is sharp! Showoff.

was this directed at me? If so a big thank you.... I've been working really hard at my B/W conversations, I won't tell you how many photos I've taken trying to master nailing focus... or how many shots have ended up in my trash bin.
This is a Star Magnolia from last fall, it is so pretty when in bloom

Nice - I like the balance the sky imparts. I'd try to straighten the horizon, though.
All of them look great. Thanks to everyone for sharing.
I'll pull one out from last October. This is a scanned B&W negative. I'm not much of a portrait shooter, but I try.

Thanks, she's got that spunky personality to go with those eyes too. She can be a little difficult at times, but we still love her.
I would really appreciate it guys if you would tell us which B&W conversion methods you use. There are more methods that can be used beyond just desaturating the image in PS or the like. And of course we can spend more bucks and purchase action plug-ins for our editing programs.
And MWAC; I usually never use just one word when I can create a whole paragraph; but those superb images of the kids- WOW!

Here is what I do.
We do this simply by clicking on, Image>Adjustments>Desaturate. After I do this I find there isnt enough contrast in the tones for me.
Next I adjust Levels, Image>Adjustments>Levels. I play with the sliders adjusting the shadows and highlights to my liking. (Move the black arrow to the right makes stronger shadows, moving the white arrow to the left makes stronger highlights).
Next up is the contrast adjustment Image>Adjustments>Brightness Contrast. I play with the contrast slider until I like the overall effect.
After this I normally find I have lost some detail in my shadow/dark areas so I have to adjust the shadows and highlights again, Image>Adjustments>Shadows Highlights), I normally only adjusted the Shadows to 10% and normally I leave the highlights at somewhere between 0-2%.
Flatten and then duplicate layer, if there are any areas I think need lighten or darken a little more, I use the dodge and burn tools, adjust my occupancy to my liking, flatten and save.
MWAC. Thank you kindly m'am. That very thorough recipe is going to be very helpful to many more than just me. Any chance we could see the original color version so that we can see what you were working with? Thanks again.
Here is one of my images of my elder son back in Cornwall, UK. When I get time I will redo it following your recipe and see how much it might improve it.
