I forgot my iMac password, and I can't find directions for resetting it. Everything I found wants me to enter the current password. In the past, I've come across "Forgot Password?, but not today. So, what do I do?

I don't use a mac, but I'll bet if you contact mac support they will help you out. Most likely bring it to a mac repair center and they will have software to solve the issue.

Go on YouTube and type in Forgotten Password On IMac and you will find lots of videos there of people showing you how to bypass that and how to reset a new password. Good Luck

Jerry, on my Mac's which are only in my home usually, I always set a password reminder that comes up after several wrong passwords are tried and is my actual password with the last two letters or numbers shown as xx.

If I cant remember the last two letters or numbers I am really in trouble! (this may be useful after you get around your current issue. Others have posted good suggestions for that!)

Are use this app to remind me of passwords. It’s on both my Mac and my iPhone so if I can’t get logged into my computer I just look it up on my iPhone. It works really well and I’ve used it for years.

Helped a friend with the same problem a while back. Worked for her...

Please try this with you Mac shutdown…

1. Hold ‘Command R’ keys down at same time and press power button once
2. Hold ‘Command R’ keys down until apple logo appears
3. Mac should reboot in ‘Recovery’ mode
4. After loading completes go to ‘Utilities’ in top menu bar and choose ‘Terminal’
5. Type ‘resetpassword’ in terminal window – one word lower case, then press enter
6. Close terminal window
7. Enter new password and verify fields
8. Click on ‘Next’ and then ‘Exit’
9. Restart Mac from Apple menu (top left)
10.Log in with your new password 😊

Thanks for the Command-R tip. I wish I could avoid all Apple passwords. It seems that each computer has its own P/W. Then iCloud and the Apple Account each need one. There's an Apple ID and its password.
Then there's the "name" and the "Apple ID". You'd think I was signing in to the CIA. : ) I hate having to enter a P/W because it's never accepted. I thought the Keychain was supposed to keep track of them.

Apple isn’t “friendly” to reset an account. I did this a wile ago, sorry I don’t remember.

No problem! You do have options under users to set no password and have to computer auto log-in each time you restart. Simplifies things if you mainly use you Mac for photo editing for example.

FWIW: a password manager today is required software. Keychain is nice, free and built into macOS, but only active after you log in. Using software like 1Password keeps all your passwords, secure notes, identities, and other information in its database, and can easily generate a hard copy to keep in case you forget a password and do not have access to 1Password.

I need only remember 1 password, even though I have lots of accounts and web sites in use with different secure passwords.

The key of course is to also have a printed copy of the password/site list printed out in case I lose access to my iMac for any reason.

You can opt to store the password database on cloud storage (encrypted of course) which then shares your 1Password program on all your devices, so the entire listing is available even without your main computer.

So, forgetting your computer password....look it up on your phone or iPad....or open that sealed envelope that contains your listing.

If you rely on your memory for a password then you are, quite frankly, an idiot.
Just about every site you go to wants a unique password (although some of mine are the same). I have over 600 'unique' passwords. I don't like password reminders because to be truly useful it must be kept in the web somewhere and I have seen too many of these sources go bust and leaving you without access. So the only thing that works every time is a hard copy which you need to keep secure somehow.
Any gadget or program, if made by a human, will fail. Unlike backups where you perhaps keep 3 copies (if you are doing it properly) it is not good secure practice to keep 3 copies of your password file so you are really screwed if you do and screwed if you don't. In the meantime I will keep running with my updated piece of paper.

I've been using LastPass on my Windows machine, but it doesn't always fill in. I'm guessing that's because of the way that the web page is formatted. LastPass doesn't recognize it as a space to be filled in. I like the way it can fill in name, address, and phone number. I don't know why keychain or Google don't work well on the Mac. I have never had any kind of Apple P/W filled in automatically.

After I did the Command-R thing, I had to sign in to most sites again, and I now have to enter my name and P/W just to get on the computer. I think there's a way around that. I'm probably one of the few people who prefers the Windows system.
