Issue with XQD Card Reader

I just upgraded to a Nikon Z6, which uses the XQD card format for media storage. I bought a Sony MRW-E90 Card reader, which has slots for a regular SD card and the XQD. I can't seem to get it to read. Occasionally, it will download to Dropbox (which is weird, as I didn't think I had a subscription), but now it just gives me an error message that there is no app associated with the USB drive. I've seen this on various internet sites, but my local camera store can't figure it out - he thought maybe I needed to download the latest RAW reader (NEF on a Nikon), but I don't think that's the problem, because I shoot in both RAW (NEF) and .jpg formats. I'm having to sync my camera with my i-phone, and then email the photos to my computer for post processing, and I'm, to say the least, a bit frustrated. Has anybody here had this problem, and does anybody have any suggestions? I may be doing something really dumb, but HELP!!!!

Computer system and OS? The software you're using to transfer the files?

Windows 10, on a Dell AIO, with 16gb RAM and i7 processor. XQD card brand is Lexar, if that means anything

thanks

Jeff, what software are you using to do the transfer?

This thread seems to indicate that an xqd card reader is not a simple storage drive, such as is the case with an sd card reader containing an sd card ??? Is this true ?

I have a Sony XQD card reader. It's not a storage device at all. It simply holds the card and transfers data to the USB port of the host computer. Jeff's is probably similar.

Jeff, the best software I've found to transfer files is ViewNX 2. It's a Nikon product. There is a setting in there that "ejects" the card after the transfer. That will keep the USB connection alive, but allow you to remove the card from the reader without messing up the USB connection. If you need more personal help, PM me and I'll be able to help you set that up.

my problem is more the card reader than the media or the camera. Not sure why but XQD readers seem a bit weird. I can't get the computer to recognize the reader

So you cannot just stick a card in a usb xqd card reader and see it as a drive on your pc ? You need an app to explore the content thaz stored on the card ?

My sd reader just looks like one more storage drive on my pc. Thus I just drag files from the card into a folder that I create on my pc.

Yes, you can put a card in the reader and use it as a drive. The reader by itself is not a storage device. The card is the storage device and the reader is the interface.

Thank you. So things remain normal.

I just happen to refer to a card reader containing a card as a storage drive cuz thaz what my pc calls it. As you’d expect, the drive has whatever name I assigned the card via the “properties” dialogs.

Just by chance...are you inserting both a SD card and a XQD card into the reader at the same time? I have a Sony reader similar to yours, and its documentation specifically cautions against doing that.

SD cards are like that. My previous camera, a Nikon D500, had a SD card and a XQD; this new Z6 only has the XQD. I had the same problem intermitently (sp) with the D500, but I had a SD card to rely on. This one is a bit of a problem :-(
