I am currently in the middle of a similar project and first sort slides on a light table with an 8x loupe and then select what I want to examine in more detail on a screen and my still working Kodak Carousel 850 to final select what I will digitize. So far I'm using my D5600 and a Nikon slide holder to convert to a digital file and then post process from there. I checked Ebay and saw several 850 projectors for less than $100. Hoggers may give you slide trays if you pay for shipping. I know when I'm done, mine will be available.
