Just as all photos are images but not all images are photos.

We used pic (single) and pix (plural) extensively back in my newspaper days, working as a reporter.

"Image" also relates to an individual's style or personna.. another usage of the word having nothing to do with photography!
Oh...well..

But wait, there's more! From Merriam-Webster online:

2a: a mental picture or impression of something

2: a mental conception held in common by members of a group and symbolic of a basic attitude and orientation

I first noticed the use of "image" about ten years ago at a photography workshop. Now I hear it all the time in YouTube videos about photography. Is there a reason for this usage?

It sounds cooler (to some people).

Only five letters, and easier to spell?

Please don't tell me that you have trouble spelling "photograph" or that you are so busy that you need the extra time you save by typing image. That said, I mostly use image. However when we are talking or writing about images made with a camera, I don't see any problem with image, picture or photograph interchangeably.

I knew that!!!! Really!!!!!

Actually, I think it’s spelled this way so it can include the palindromic reference to “lens”. Leaving the “s” out wouldn’t make any sense. I mean, what the heck is a “Len”??

Oh! Oh! I know! I know!

Thirty percent of the English language is French Image is French and so is photography. There are three ways to spell color and so it goes. Look up William the conquerer for this history. All military ranks are french. Remember Kernal, no it is spelled CO LO NEL.

Here is the dictionary meaning of IMAGE:

Full Definition of image (Entry 1 of 2)
1a
: a visual representation of something: such as
(1): a likeness of an object produced on a photographic material
(2): a picture produced on an electronic display (such as a television or computer screen)
b: the optical counterpart of an object produced by an optical device (such as a lens or mirror) or an electronic device
2a(1): a mental picture or impression of something
had a negative body image of herself
(2): a mental conception held in common by members of a group and symbolic of a basic attitude and orientation
a disorderly courtroom can seriously tarnish a community's image of justice

I'll go with a photograph, image, picture, whatever! Makes no difference to me as long as the person I am talking to or writing to knows what heck I am saying. Nowadays fols like to use trendy words, euphemisms, and complicated words and phrases instead of simple straight talk. All that does is mess up precise communications. First people make up and use all these strange incarnations of simple language and then sit around and try to decipher, analyze and unscramble all of it and assign new meanings to words that have little to do with reality.

I have been in the photography business all my work life and have served the general public, industrial and corporate clients. I have dealt with ordinary folks, art directors, creative types and sorts and I call my photograph "PHOTOGRAPHS" or pictures. I sincerely hope that my work speaks for itself and I do not need to assign fancy names, superlatives, or trendy monikers to any of my offerings or styles.

Trying to define every kind of photograph by its method or physics of production may be of interest to photograhers on a technical level but to worry about exactly how the image is processed in the camera, post-processed or not, enhanced or not, has become picayune and laborious to no end. At the end of any basic photographic process, there is YES, an IMAGE- the question is, is it beautiful, ugly, revealing, grotesque, does it tell a story, make an impression or statement, is it generally well crafted, if it a commercial shot, does it fulfill the client's requirements and will you be paid????.

It can be explained by the existential Question, Why is any word used to express anything as opposed to any other word? And the existential answer is Because. English is a strange language, there are no rules as to what any word means, as that meaning often changes over time.

I went to visit my mother when she was 88 and suffering from Alzheimer's disease. On the TV news they were inviting people to join a gay pride parade. Mom said she wanted to join the parade. I asked her why and she said, "I'm a happy person".

I told her there was a new definition and told her the new definition. She didn't quite grasp what I told her but I loved her response. "What's the hell wrong with those people, they couldn't come up with a word of their own".

You are right Mr. Shapiro, "All that does is mess up precise communications."

There are three responses to a great image: yes, no, or they must have used a mirrorless camera.
