There is a free version of Capture One. Most don't know. Hidden gem.

Based on UHH advice, I chose Affinity Photo as my processing software. It costs $30 but that's a one-time purchase price (includes upgrades), unlike the other major programs that require a monthly subscription fee. Affinity's capabilities are on par with those programs (Photoshop, Light Room, etc.), too. The free software I've seen offer only the most basic functions; probably no better than Window's.

In othe rwords, GIMP cannot do any detailed retouching, get a life...

I just looked at Adobe Photoshop Express and I'm not sure it's free ... maybe parts of it are free. Below are copy/paste from my search. The third is a review by PCMagazine.

While part of the Adobe Photoshop family, Photoshop Express is intentionally built for mobile device photography. Its accessible interface enables photo collage edits and social network sharing.

Like those, Photoshop Express requires a Creative Cloud account for full functionality. This will set you back $9.99 per month.

I have Adobe Photoshop Express - it's the program with which I started my wife on photo processing. I don't pay Adobe anything for anything, though you sometimes are asked for your Adobe login (which is free!!!). Photoshop Express does everything reasonably required by many, and is by FAR the easiest, simplest photo processing program I have seen - and I have used or at least looked at MANY. I was not aware, however, of a Capture One Express, and will have to look it up, as Capture One impressed me favorably - except for the price, which is way out of my ballpark. We now are using ON1, upgraded to the latest iteration, and find it to be excellent, and as I have said elsewhere, much better than Lightroom in all aspects of file handling!

But be aware that PS Express is a collection of pre-sets and doesn’t do layers. My only experience with it is on the iPad.

You don't have to use the presets - at all - in order to process your photos! If you need layers, you do require some other software, but many will find Photoshop Express ALL they need to achieve their desired results!!!

I don't understand why FREE is such a big deal. Your camera wasn't free. What's another $30 bucks?
