Ok, All weevils are weird by definition.
But what the heck is that fly? Wish I had got a closer shot. The flower's <15mm.
Unknown Spreadwing I need Doc for this one! If it were up to me, I'd call it a bamboo Spreadwing.
You're killin' me with this one Vic. This guy is very teneral. Probably emerged about an hour ago. He doesn't have his coloration or full markings. If you had a dorsal view of his terminal appendages I could tell you. That being said my guess from what I can see in the download I'd say Spotted or Northern Spreadwing. So sorry I can't be of more help with this one.

I love the spreadwing picture. The highlights are terrific.
The weird fly looks like a kind of soldier fly (Stratiomyidae).

Thanks Mark! I was also thinking maybe Tachinidae as I seem to have an abundance of parasitic flies around here.
Great series. Tack sharp and highly detailed.

Thanks Sippy. However, rarely yet as sharp as I would like. Always practice practice! I've had the D850 since it came out & just hit 40,000 frames with it. I go out every day.
The fly looks like it could be a Bee Fly (Bombyliidae), though there are several other families of flies that mimic bees.
Looking more like family Acroceridae, perhaps - Eulonchus sp. - Eulonchus marginatus
The males are reddish colored.
Any thoughts anybody?
