Can't ID him for sure but I think his name is Tommy. I do know that a snail was riding on his back and was heard to exclaim "WHEE!!"
Snapping Turtle for sure. The second shot shows the only safe place to be.

So that's the origin of the term "S-car go?"
Don't get in his or her way, you are asking for trouble. Over the years I have remove a few of them that came into my back yard.

Around here they are called Hard-shelled Snappers.
I still have some shells that I harvested around 30+ yrs ago, the snappers were decimating the Ducks the landlord had put on the sanitation lagoon, its amazing to watch a full grown Pekin Duck disappear under water for no apparent reason, come up squaking only to go under again, I got 14 in two days jugging.
The shells made good trading material at the Rendezvous.

Actually if you grab them by the tail and get their feet off the ground you are reasonably safe.
I have seen a lot of snapping turtles in the ponds in my area. Especially the swampy ones. They almost appear to be small alligators when they are swimming, the way you mostly see their tails moving. I understand they are responsible for many of the one legged swans, ducks and other water birds. They smell really awful, and can lunge at you with a quickness that is startling. They will have your finger if you are not careful.
Nice photos. Definitely will keep out of its way. Mahalo for sharing.
Nice try Dave, but you need your big turtle lens not your birding lens :)
Definitely look up but be careful if they are looking for a target.
Try to put one picture in front of the other to show the whole turtle at once. HaHa My idea of humor.
Call him dinner. They are delicious. Make a great soup.
