Double Reverse Ring?

After a couple of hours and 30 shots of this patient wasp (cool overcast morning), trying everything from handheld to camera upside down on tripod center post, I thought I needed more light. During a sudden attack of stupidity, I plugged in a 500-watt halogen, which took only seconds to warm up my model and he/she was gone before I had time to focus.

So, the question....My favorite closeup setup is extension tube, then reversing ring, then reversed 50mm prime lens. Does anyone make a mount that would let me mount a screw-on LED ring light to the rear of a Nikon F lens?

I believe this set-up to be workable with your tubes & reversed 50.

Thanks, Nikonian. I had looked at the equipment setups in the Macro section before, but I thought the O-Flash was a whole 'nuther strobe unit, so I ignored it. Now that I see what it is, that's the way to go, and far less than the type of adapter I was looking for! Thanks again.

Nikonian has some great ideas. As for direct mounting to the rear of the lense, how about using a spare rear lense cap and drilling about a 1" hole in it? You could then screw or glue one of the lighting systems cap for quick mounting.

Nikonian, would there be a problem with vignetting with this idea?

Now there's a pretty slick idea too! Since there's not much else for us old guys to do in the middle of the night in Portland, OR, and being as my sig other is used to me carrying out strange experiments........

If this doesn't work, Mogul, you'll owe me a rear cap and a mounting plate!

Will let you know how/if this works out.

Step one, saw a rear lens cap in haf

Step two, clamp the connector half to light mounting plate

That's the first time I've ever seen or heard of a lens being put on backwards. How close to the subject do you need to be (or how close can you get?)

Cal, thanks, but your link is for a reversing ring similar to the one I use to attach the front of the lens to the camera or extension tube. I'm convinced by now that nobody makes the thing I'm looking for.

Planepics, with this particular setup, subject is about 2 1/2 inches front the lens element, and about one inch in front of the ring light. Here's a couple of links to previous threads that discuss this subject complete with pictures with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one, and way too technical for me. All I know is it works. :-D

Mogul looks like the clear winner here and gets the weekly gold star for American ingenuity. A few beers later, this was all glued up and ready to go! Well, one small problem. If I had skipped the beer step, maybe I wouldn't have glued the mounting plate on BACKWARDS!

In these pics, the light is just hanging on by one edge, until I take it apart and reglue. And if you think you really know your camera, try hanging it upside down and try to find the right buttons! This has been fun.

Yes, got it attached!
Yes, got it attached!...

Now where was the shutter button?
Now where was the shutter button?...

The Nikon BR-2 adapter mounts to the camera body and allows you to mount a lens by the filter ring (52mm in the case of the BR-2).

The Nikon BR-3 Bayonet Mount Adapter Ring for 52mm Filters attaches to the REAR of a Nikon mount lens when that lens is reverse mounted to either a camera or bellows unit. It provides 52mm threading for filters and other front attachments when the lens is reversed. (I stole this word for word from the BH Photo website)

I use the BR-3 to mount a filter so that I don't risk damaging the rear lens element.

I guess I stand corrected, Cal. Thanks for the clarification.

I would get another ( even cheap) extension tube to mount on the 50 as a lens hood and for protection of the rear element.

Only until the glue is too dry to turn the mounting plate around. Lol.
