If you're able to get out and about, look for stronger silhouettes for the horizon - something to draw us into the scene. Be mindful of the "black blob" that cameraf4 so eloquently stated 
With your photo #1 I believe a stronger composition is to crop from both the bottom and the right side, making the frame about 1/3 black and 2/3 colorful sky + the sun slightly off-center. I've pm'd you an example.
