The fires were burning 2 blocks from my home in 1992, we did not see the sun for several days due to the smoke, I remember driving the 101 freeway thru the downtown area and seeing palm trees on the overpass lighting the way as they burned. Finally the Marines were called in to put the r**ts on out.

I was near the 1970 Asbury Park r**ts. For a while I though I’d get caught by them they were headed towards where I was. They were bad - worse than anything in ‘92 or today.

I went through the neighborhood a week afterwards - a chunk of the city was simply gone. Brick walls, piles of stone and brick, and heat twisted steel. Some it had slumped down to the ground in places. The images got seared into my head.
