Considering a bridge camera for carrying around in the truck for those times when I see something I want to shoot without having to carry my DSLR and lenses around all the time. Looking to spend in the $700 to 900 range. I have an old Lumix, but it just doesn't do the trick anymore.

I purchased a FZ 1000 here on UHH last year and I use it more than any of my other cameras. It takes consistently good pictures and is loaded with options. Every one of my 6 LUMIX cameras produce good photos but this one is the best of the batch.

Do you prefer the bulk, or considering smaller too? Same sensor size and pixels: the ZS100.

The electronic viewfinder is fine and dandy. Raw capability (see pics in the thread I linked), shortcut buttons, auto ISO available. For purse size, I am liking it!

The macro setting, hand-held, heavily cropped:

For me the ZS1000 is light and easy to use, unlike my big Nikons and their lenses it is easy to carry. The lens carries the Leica name and the O.I.S is phenomenal.

Camera designations have become too confusing! I have ZS100; is that what you meant?

I see that the FZ1000 has equiv. focal range of 25 - 400 mm, a bit more reach than the ZS100, which is 25 - 250.

The M2 also has an articulated touchscreen and bluetooth. But I'll keep my ZS100 for its size.

That is correct but the Digital zoom can double that to 800mm, and it is better than most digital zooms. My Fz70 has a 1200mm optical zoom but the sensor is smaller in size and MP and has a bit more noise. I really think these cameras do so well is the Leica Approved Lens. I have taken what I consider excellent pictures with both cameras.

Linda, I'm so happy you have a Lumix camera. I bought one a couple years ago because I thought my Canon was going to be too heavy as I 'aged'. I'm going to be 82 in August and I took wildlife photos with a 600mm Tamron. The dealer told me that the Lumix is lighter and will take the same photos. Then he added this also has a 'Photostacking' feature. I didn't know what Photostacking is, then had a TIA and was out of it for a long time. Couldn't speak, etc. Now I am beginning to use photostacking frequently.

Photostacking is a SUPER feature that Panasonic has but hardly says anything about it. If your camera has the Photostacking feature I would like you to try to take another of the spider if you still have it–or other small insect to see what you can do. It's the feature with one of the stack of photos showing.

You can Photostack a photo in about 4 minutes. YouTube has videos on it & one of the best is Allen Walls. You must have 4K in your camera for it to work.

You can find him frequently in Newest Pictures above.

Sippyjug 104, will help you with any questions you may have. He's generous and his photos are beautiful.

That is a bit smaller than the old Lumix that I have. I don't know why, but I have a bit more difficulty holding it as steady. The EVF on my current Lumix is pretty lousy, and the LCD screen is very small and not good resolution. As my eyes have gotten older it is a bit more difficult to judge the focus. The "bulk" isn't really an issue. Just something better than the Lumix I have. I have a D7200 and a good assortment of lenses. I could buy another D7200 body and a good zoom for my "truck" camera, but I'll spend more than it will cost for what I need.

Whichever camera you decide, the improved EVF and LCD screen will make you very, very happy

I also understand about the size affecting ability to hold steady.

Using my DMC-G7 yesterday (with 14-140 mm lens - a very lightweight combo) I was reminded of how much I appreciate a rotating LCD for low angle. The G7, the ZS100, and another mirrorless ILC - an Olympus EM10 - were all purchased used from B&H.

Best to you.

Linda, this Lumix FZ1000 is a wonderfully designed camera with a larger 1" sensor, a good EVF and an articulated screen.

Tha zoom range up to 400mm is sufficient for the most of photographer's need without going overboard with the impressive specs of the super zooms - as the copetition like Sony does. For the double of the price, though.
Just consider holding 1200mm zoom on some of those "uber" cameras.
The lens is designed by Leitz and is manufactured in Japan - giving you a quality assurance.

I think I use this camera for the same reasons you would like to have your camera be able to do?
Only when I like to use a larger sensor like APS-C size, a full format or medium format digital camera, then I still carry both - FZ1000 for the convenience and the other one for large prints.
BTW: With the Lumix FZ1000 I can go easily to 16"x20" or can make cropped images.

Good Luck with your choice!
Cheers!

I bought a Panasonic LUMIX FZ 1000 from National Camera in Golden Valley, MN and it was just ok. I returned it to National Camera and they happily took it back for 100% store credit. I then purchased the FZ 2500 from them and I really like it a lot. Very sharp photos, lots of features and excellent videos.

I've had an FZ1000 original model for several years now. Perfect for my needs: something I can hump up and down mountains all day (well, usually most of the day; have had to hand it off to my travel partner a couple of times). Nice to be retired, but age creeping up. I like the 400mm reach with the larger sensor; she prefers her FZ300's 600mm with the smaller sensor.

I've been dreaming of the FZ1000 m2, several new features, including focus stacking and the 1 button reacquire object, intriguing. But not enough to push me over the edge yet. But with travel curtailed for the future, those savings just might find a destination.
