In New England this bird is common the "Coopers Hawk". this time of year we see them feasting on small birds they catch in the air or on the ground. A spread of feathers and remains is also a sign one was visiting our yard.
It's not a Cooper's Hawk. Their wings are dark grey. It's either a Red Shouldered Hawk or a Sharp Shin
The tells are the size (which can't tell here), the legs (skinnier and yellower on sharp shin), and I believe the tail feathers. One is straight and one tapered like this one. But I don't recall which is which and don't have bird book handy.
It is most definitely an immature Red-shouldered Hawk. Red-shouldered Hawks are the most common hawk by far in that area. Nice pic !!! BTW, not all Red-tailed Hawks have red tails. The juvenile and Harlan's Red-tailed Hawks don't.
