I thought this bird might be a Red-Tailed hawk, but I don't see a red tail?
Sorry for bad lighting; lots of rain here in Venice, FL.

Someone told me that if you can get closer than 20 ft it's a Sharp Shinned Hawk otherwise it's a Coopers Hawk

Merlin thinks this is an adult red-shouldered hawk.

In New England this bird is common the "Coopers Hawk". this time of year we see them feasting on small birds
they catch in the air or on the ground. A spread of feathers and remains is also a sign one was visiting our yard.

It's not a Cooper's Hawk. Their wings are dark grey. It's either a Red Shouldered Hawk or a Sharp Shin

I'm pretty sure it's a Red Shoulder Hawk. Common in Florida and a small area in California.

The tells are the size (which can't tell here), the legs (skinnier and yellower on sharp shin), and I believe the tail feathers. One is straight and one tapered like this one. But I don't recall which is which and don't have bird book handy.

Pic. Eye color wrong for sharp shin. I like red shoulder except no white tail stripes and the legs look feathered.

I'm guessing immature red shouldered hawk.... courtesy of Merlin photo ID (if you don't have the app, it's free, check it out).

It is most definitely an immature Red-shouldered Hawk. Red-shouldered Hawks are the most common hawk by far in that area. Nice pic !!!
BTW, not all Red-tailed Hawks have red tails. The juvenile and Harlan's Red-tailed Hawks don't.

Thanks all. I'll settle on an immature Red-tailed hawk.
