A little religious humor (a Rabbi confessional)
I wonder what happens during Jewish atonement?

You fast from sundown the evening before. Go to synagogue for a couple of hours- beautiful ceremony called Kol Nidre.
You return to synagogue the next morning, say about 10, pray for your sins to be forgiven. Each category of sin is annunciated. You get out after 1PM.
You go home for a few hours, shmooze with friends. Come back later in the afternoon for more prayers. The shofar ends the Yom Kippur services at sunset.
We used to break our fast with dairy.
One of my favorite memories is of walking to shul (small synagogue) on the holy days.
Back before the Romans destroyed the Temple, the high Priest would go into the Holy of Holies at the center of the Temple and pray. It was only used by him on that day. It was (still is by many) to be the holiest spot on Earth. From there one’s prayers go directly to G.d.
That holiest spot was stolen by Muslims who put the al Aqsa mosque directly on top. They further befouled the temple area by putting in a Cemetary.
Great explanation. My father belonged to an Orthodox temple that was about 3 miles from home. We would there during the high holidays. When he was in his eighties, I would drive there. Unfortunately, the area changed, and it was not a great idea to go there at night. It got to the point where the rabbi would not walk there at night either.

In speaking about the Day of Atonement prior to the destruction of the Temple, you forgot to mention the sprinkling of blood on the Mercy Seat of the blood of a bull, as well as the blood of one of two goats. The other, the scapegoat, was driven from camp, bearing the sins of the people. There was also an offering for the high priest and his family.
