You get really close, but take the long lens anyway, and you’ll use it. I strongly recommend a bug net/head net too - they are only a few bucks from Amazon, but worth every penny when you are around the herds of animals.
[quote=PaulB] While observing a bull elephant, one man in our group decided to boost himself on to the roof of the vehicle.
The only hard rule seems to be do not break the outline of the vehicle. They are habituated to the vehicles and their shapes. When the fellow created a new outline by getting on the roof it removed the familiarity.
I received a stern look but no lashing one afternoon when leaning out the side to get a clear low(er) angle shot of a lounging male lion.
40 to 50 percent of my time is spent on the ground. Using extreme care, caution and knowing the possible behavior of a species has helped. Please note I said possible, not predictable. I have never felt unsafe; but, of course, I have had guides/armed guards with me at all times. Play it safe, don't disturb the wildlife at any time, watch for infants, always be aware of your surroundings, have an escape route in mind AND don't hang out of a vehicle! The only trip I would not go on the ground was for tigers in India. I watched clip of a big male leap at an elephant and that scared the $#!^ out of me. Tigers hunt by ambush and can leap 30 feet.

No, they aren't bigger than a Polar Bear. They are the biggest Brown Bears but not as big as Polar Bears.

I keep my safari photos on my iPad since people ask to see them. I get asked a lot about how close are you to the animals. Photo is from my iPhone. Quite close. I've been almost this close to an elephant, with elephants you have to keep very still, and nothing must stick out of the vehicle. Cheetahs don't seem to care, they will mark their scent on vehicle tires. Leopards seem to be indifferent, and lions don't care much either. Although it would be a very different story if you got out of the vehicle!
