I had a Western Digital external hard drive to immediately fail. It has taken 5 months, but today I received a replacement drive! I guess persistence pays.

Did you have the recovery program for your photos, Kathy?

That's sort of what I thought. Thanks

Actually, Mike, I didn't really lose anything. I had some scans on my internal drive, and I was starting to move them to the external when it died. Unfortunately, I used "move" instead of "copy," so yes, they are gone. But they are redoable.

Glad you've finally got a full functional external hard drive AzPicLady

In another life as a network admin I maintained a number of file servers all configured with RAID 5.
Amazing storage system, could actually pull out a drive in real-time and swap in a new one... The RAID 5 system would repopulate the new drive immediately... no problems... EVER! albeit it's not cheap... lol

For my own personal use I have a mirrored system strategy... always have two identical computers and mirror data files between them... Not only that I have an "extra" identical computer with all applications installed albeit no data files... this sleeps in a closet unused... Have actually used this twice on the past decade... seamless way to "remirror" with minimal time investment...

With all personal PC's you will likely have a drive failure...
Please always have redundant storage of critical data files...

Ok, as a network admin I discovered the Federal Government actually rents their PC's and turns them in after only a year or two... So I buy all my computers as refurbs from MicroCenter... epic cost savings...

https://www.microcenter.com/category/4294964325,519/view-all

Caveat: This is germane for PC savvy users who understand the parameters they need in a computer...
Hobbyist may not have a positive experience in deploying a refurb...

These refurbs typically come with latest OS (with Microsoft support) and a warranty...
Like all my Nikon cameras all my computers are refurbs...
Micro Center is the B&H of PC's.... lol

Hope this helps others looking to purchase a backup PC.
All the best and Stay Safe!

Thanks for all the info. I actually have a computer "guru" that I have known for decades that has a contract with Intel. He takes their 2YO computer off their hands, cleans them, and resells them. He makes a good living, and his customers get really good computers for a LOT less $$.

Try this link. The URL in the original post did not work for me either, because of the comma. If clicking on the link fails, try copy- paste.

Persistence gave me my wonderful bride of 50 years and counting.

It's a company called Softque. Really small, one-person shop. Not sure if he has a website.
