I have a ~10 years old iPad that's outdated. I'm considering replacing it with the newest iPad Pro 12.9" model. I would like to start post processing my images (Olympus E-M1 Mk2, Canon R, both RAW) with Lightroom on the new pad. I'm currently doing the PP on a PC using LR Classic.
My questions for those UHH members with the experience -
1) Which LR version should be used on the iPad?
2) Do I need to store my images on both PC's hard drives and on the iPad?
3) Is it possible to access the PC images from the iPad?
4) How can I download images from SD cards to the iPad, i.e. what accessory do i need for that task?

1. I don't use LR on my iPad so can't answer that part.

2. No _need_ to, but you definitely should. Always have a backup of your original images. iPad is not a good idea for permanent long term storage.

3. Yes. With a Mac, there are several options - airdrop being one of the easiest. You can also use a free "icloud" account (or DropBox, Google Drive, Amazon Drive, etc. - any cloud service) to share files between devices.

4. The new iPad pro should be a USB-C connection. Apple makes a USB-C to SD Card reader (https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MUFG2AM/A/usb-c-to-sd-card-reader). There are other options that offer this and other functionality.

Yes, Light Room & Photoshop are available at the App Store along with PhotoShop Express & PhotoShop Fix (both free). If your going to process raw files I would go for the 1TB iPad Pro ($1,400 new), but I have seen renewed versions on Amazon for $900.

Not being a smart a$$, but my first question would be are you really planning on doing PP on a 12.9” screen? Alternately, have you considered a MacBook that you can plug in an external monitor? In response to your questions:

1) the latest available version, which I believe is 5.2.5
2) yes, because you’ll really need the larger screen of the PC for serious editing, but for a second copy of your data, ICloud is a seamless solution
3) there are lots of ways to accomplish this, but The easiest is to simply connect them via USB and import the images into the IPad. Other ways include shared local or cloud storage. You may find this useful: https://support.apple.com/guide/ipad/transfer-files-between-ipad-and-your-computer-ipad32dd03cd/ipados
4) Apple sells a simple SD card reader that plugs into your USB C port: https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MUFG2AM/A/usb-c-to-sd-card-reader

I am assuming you want to maintain using your PC as the primary editing tool. Here is a good article.

The iPad screen seems awfully small for high quality photo editing.

I just use ICloud to share all my photos between my Mac and IPad Pro. I also have a card reader for the IPad. But I rarely use it. I like to download all photos to my Mac hard drive first. Then the photos get automatically backed up to an external hard drive and ICloud.

You will want the Apple Pencil to use with your IPad Pro. Once I started editing with the pencil on my IPad I didn’t want to go back to editing with a mouse on a PC.

I do a fair amount of basic processing on iPad Pro the finish in LR or Photoshop. If you put you images in a LR collection and sync to LR cloud you can edit them on your iPad in LR and it will sync the edits back. That way it does not use your iPad storage up. The screen is outstanding and I have old eyes. It also allows quick easy portability. As they continue to open additional features it gets better and better. Don’t let the big screen deter you. Sometimes I like to sit outside by the lake and edit. Sorta like the artist who setup a canvas at an area and paint

LR Classic will not work on the iPad, just LR CC.

That is a good point. Your can use LR classic on computer and sync collection with Ipad use LR mobile (CC) make edits then it syncs back with computer (automatically) in your Classic version. I have roughly 10,000 images sync only uses 3.3 gb of storage on adobe cloud. and you can always un-sync a collection it stays as collection on PC collection it will disappear from Ipad

You can use your iPad Pro for photos, you can get a SSD to run on the iPad, look it up on YouTube...you can also drive a external monitor, again, YouTube, basically the iPad Pro can become a MacBook....another item, for me, I couldn’t get a Bluetooth key board to work correctly (brydge and Logitech ) I’ll be getting the latest magic keyboard by Apple...the two previous mentioned had a delay imputing keystrokes to the iPad screen...
Best of luck and enjoy...

Thanks to all that responded with excellent advice. A couple of clarifications - I download my images to an internal PC drive which is backed every week to 2 external drives. All my editing is done on the PC.
My idea is to be able to sit downstairs or in the yard and do some additional editing, viewing on the iPad. The heavy work is still going to be on the PC with the large monitor.
I go on several trips every year (this year is, obviously, an outlier) using several SD cards. I switch cards every couple of days, trying to stay at below 1k images per card. So far no card has gone bad but I want to make sure that any loss will be minimized. I don't download anything during the trip but may want to do that in the future with the new iPad.
I understand that I'll use LR Classic on the PC and LR CC on the iPad. The images will be synchronized between the PC and the iPad. So, in summary, the iPad will be an addition, not a replacement to my post-processing workflow.

Again, thanks to you for helping me here.

This is my workflow as well. Works very well.

When you download from card to iPad you can have LR upload to your PC (if you keep it always on) so that you would have card, iPad and PC backup.

I use an application called VNC which lets me access my PC over wifi from my iPad.

This is what I have, except my iPad Pro2 is the 256 gig version. Since I shoot mainly JPEG, anyway, it’s not a big deal.
The Apple SD card slot to USB-C adapter works well and only costs $25.00. Since Apple is pretty much shut down during this pandemic, you can find them at Best Buy.
