Hey good buddies, I keep seeing an ad on Facebook for a free photo editor. All you have to do is download it. Do any of you have any idea what this is or have had experience with it? I am afraid to download it. It might be some form of Malware that will cause me all kinds of trouble.
Thankie most kindly.

There are many free photo editors, especially if you include apps for phones and/or online use only. Use Google Search to find something that looks interesting, then check back on UHH to see if anyone is familiar with it.

I would consider a free editor that is already popular (and trustworthy), not just any editor that is advertised.

Definitely ask before downloading.

I have been using RawTherapee (free download) for more than 8 years
without any problems at all.

It's nowhere near as complex as Photoshop. but it's great for
light levels, sharpening, noise control, correcting vertical perspective error,
and it has a few other tricks up its sleeve.

Here's a review (Natalia complains about lag... on my computer it's speed is good):

If you want free editing software download Faststone. Or also Irfanview. Both are good for their intended purposes.

Yes they are. But neither runs on Mac. Maybe not Linux either.

Never, ever download free offers from 3rd party sites like Facebook, etc. At best they are usually an advertising gimmick to get you to buy something else, at worse they can be dangerous malware. Always download directly from a reputable publisher's site or their designated distributor.

I’ve been using Faststone (it’s free) as my default viewer and have been very happy with it. I like to first view all my images on an SD card using Faststone before importing into Lightroom or Photoshop. The advantage for me is seeing the image on a large screen rather than a thumbnail. I’ll make the quick edits that FS offers such as cropping, auto color and lighting adjustments Etc. without saving them to get a feel for the potential of each frame. Those I like go to Lr for PP. Just my two cents worth…works for me.

Color me cynical if you like. Free software (or anything else for that matter) is worth exactly what you pay for it. Beware!

If a Nikon shooter the Nikon Processing packs from Nikon Web page (downloads) are great and free. I use the older NX2 package with my Nikon D90/7100, Sony, and with little superzoom Fuji and Canon cameras, and newer NXD Transfer 2/Capture NXD with my D7200. No cost, fairly powerful, and no download fears. The others mentioned ahead of my post are also good. Good luck and have fun.

I wouldn’t use any app like that from Facebook. The good free ones are available from their developer's own website.

GIMP is free and is a very in-depth program. It does have a learning curve, as all programs do.
