Statisticians love statistics. SOO many ways to lie!

Anything can be proved with statistics, point and counter-point.
It simply depends on how the information is presented.

This article is about science - not politics

Our society has been awash in the Covid-19 virus long enough that now Science Magazine has devoted nearly an entire article to it.

https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2020/04/how-does-coronavirus-kill-clinicians-trace-ferocious-rampage-through-body-brain-toes
tells how a human body can be affected as the virus works its way through it.

Uhhhh yea, not political ? you have been on this forum long enough to know better that this. It does not take much at all for things spin down the political sewer trap and then wind up in the attic. This is too bad of course because the BS and political spoutings just take away from the discussion while hopefully could have lead to intelligent and informative discussions which someone like me, could learn something from. Oh well, it is the season. My two cents.

Unfortunately the President has only a large megaphone; his actual understanding is poor at best. For example, real scientific {repeatable} studies have shown the masks stop that widespread broadcasting of viruses from a human to the environment.

I read just the abstract of your attached article - as usual, it is about the flu - totally irrelevant to Covid!.

ps - I have taken a number of college courses in Statistics.

1. There are a lot of Folks here that are not statisticians. My comment simply was a a bit of a warning to those that are not.

2. Just because you took a course in statistics doesn't make you a statistician. I have nearly 50 years of analyzing data for publication into the scientific literature. I still employ Ph.D. statisticians when things get bit tricky.

3. If you read the article you would note that the authors were not determining whether or not others were infected but rather were analyzing for viral material. Corona and flu viruses are roughly the same size. Masks work or don't work the same.

4. Your feelings about the President are irrelevant. All politicians and media folks are nearly scientifically illiterate. Some are not stupid, however. I have advised a few politicians on scientific matters including some that you would probably would not like. I was impressed with their ability to grasp new material quickly and and get to the essence of the matter.

#4 statistically speaking, of course. It works well with broad brushes.

Everyone's feelings about the President are irrelevant.
That is precisely why I began this thread by saying it has nothing to do with politics!!

Very good reply. Well spoken and to the point to those who want to dribble away from a decent conversation.
Well spoken and thank you for the reply to all of us.

Much more than a course. I would also want the opinion of a professional, but I said that only in response to the comment to indicate that I have a useful reading knowledge.

As to your second contention, you are proposing something that is in a closed system. Medicine is not a closed system, thus no specific numbers as to researchers. The question becomes whether the conclusion is valid. Here we start getting into the expertise of those involved. By the by, the researchers are looking for facts for their consensus, not some conclusion.

For consideration. What differentiates a chemical versus a virus? For example, Cyanide gas versus virulent germ? One can die from either one. What separates the two is as to the way it happens.

Which is harder to treat? Bacterial infections or viral infections? The latter, in that there is a greater likelihood that the cures will kill the hosts.

When scientists are in debate as to whether Covid 19 is live, the worry is that if it is not alive we cannot kill it!
However - we can still destroy it.

Good movie tag line:
"We cannot kill it, it continues to live among us. Beware."

The common denominator seems to be the cell surface receptor Ace2, if only something could be changed there without killing the patient, or somehow changing the virus so it cannot attach to cells with Ace2....Excellent Article from Science, Thanks for Posting....

For a non-medical/scientific person our president seems to have a decent understanding the important issues.[/quote]

Important issues like how much he can steal from the US Treasury? How he can corrupt the Justice Department? How he can be sure nobody is held accountable for their actions?

As far as masks go … your reference is from 7 years ago and actually appears to prove the opposite of what you're saying, that masks don't make any difference.

Excellent summary of the systemic effects of this dangerous virus
Thanks for the true science
