Eliminate duplicates from IPad photo library

Over the years, duplicates have been added to my I-photo library. I have 20K images, of which about 20% may be duplicates. Recently, I accidentally downloaded about 400 images, using my IPAD card reader, because I did not notice that all of the pictures were checked, rather than just the ten, or so, that I wanted. I have tried some of the apps, but have not succeeded. The app goes through my photos, identifying duplicates, and at the end, it freezes. Any suggestions?

My suggestions to contact Apple support.

Is your iPad the only Apple product, or you also have an Apple computer? If your answer is yes, then I have this to say. You might have set your computer/iPad to icloud for photos. That caused the duplication.
It happened to me a couple times when I first bought my iPad late last year. Didn't know why. After playing around, I discovered that was the case. I reset to not sync with my computer (just photos).
Now, whenever I want to just load the pics I wanted to my iPad, I would load them onto an SD card. Plug the card into my iPad, never had that issue ever again.

This might help. I haven't used it but it was the first in the list on Apple's APP Store.

The "app" behind your eyes is the best way to keep track of what you keep and what you dispose. It's also free.

Thank you. I’ve used this before. It is a lengthy process, but it seems to identify duplicates, before freezing. Your post prompted me to look at the Apple Store and saw that there is an update. Maybe they fixed the bug. I downloaded the update and will try again. I will report my outcome.

If you use iCloud to store photos, etc. your devices don’t duplicate the photos. They appear on all your devices. If you delete from one they delete from all. It’s like albums they
do not
duplicate the photos. Photos just appear in both places.
When I save to the external hard drive, I have to wait until they download from the icloud before
Deleting from the Mac. Or they won’t be on the external hard drive. So be careful of that. In the beginning I lost a few photos.
Also iCloud storage is different from your shared albums on the cloud.
Hope this helps.
