Nikon D850 Focus Stacking setting

Yesterday I attempted to use the
Focus Stacking option on my D850 and I got a message that said
NOT AVALIABLE IN CAMERAS CURRENT SETTINGS
I changed some settings but still got the message.
Are there special settings when you are going to use Focus Stacking?
Any suggestions
Thanks

It will not perform this function with many lenses. What lens did you have mounted? My Tokina 100mm will not work but my Nikon 50mm will.

You can't have the shutter set for a timed release - took me a while to figure it out.

I don't have a D850 but I do have one that does "in camera" HDR and in order for that to work it has to be set to JPEG not raw.

Focus stacking was the main reason I upgraded from an D800E to the D850:
These are the settings/setup that I typically use:

1. Autofocus lens and the switch on the lens is not on manual.
2. Use aperture priority or manual. (Not shutter priority: you need a constant aperture)
3. RAW or JPEG is fine ... I always shoot RAW including focus stacks.
4. I usually am shooting at f/7.1 with the Nikon 105 f/2.8 macro.

You are referring to focus shift which is done in camera. Focus stacking is done in your computer with all the pictures you took while focus shifting. Make sure that the timer is OFF, AF is on and that's all. I have used the same setup and equipment you have without any issues.

You need to use an AF-S lens, P or A exposure, RAW or JPG.

This is step 9 in my notes on Focus Stacking. I will gladly print all 10 steps, but don't want to overwhelm the system and don't know if I'd be violating some rules regarding length of answers:

9. If you have a Nikon D850:

A. Use an AF-S or AF-P Nikon lens.

B. Set the focus to Auto Focus (this feature will not work with manual focus).

C. On the camera, go to: Menu > Camera icon (Photo Shooting Menu) > Focus Shift Shooting (next to last menu option – 4th page).

i. Set Number of Shots to 50 (it shouldn't require that many shots, but you are giving the camera latitude to capture the entire subject).

ii. Set Focus Step Width to Narrow (1 for macros, 3 or more for nature shots - experiment to determine what to use in each case).

iii. Set Interval to Next Shot to zero.

iv. Set Exposure Smoothing to on.

v. Set Silent Photography to on (keeps the mirror locked up - leave it off if you are using studio strobes). Use Mirror Up mode.

vi. To store the grouped photos separately on the memory card:

a. Select Starting storage folder > New folder.

vii. Highlight Start.

viii. Ok (the camera will process and then shoot on its own).

Thanks.....can you "only" use a Nikon lens on the D850 when doing photo stacking?

My research indicated only Nikon AF-S and AF-P lenses. While other lenses made by other manufacturers might work, they also might not be supported by the software imbedded in your camera. If you (or anyone else) sends me your email address, I'll send you a much more complete set of outline notes on image stacking, from pre-shooting setup to post processing. As an added bonus, the email shouldn't mess with the outlines (UHH reformats it). I try to reduce everything to something like a pre-flight checklist. Follow it line by line and you won't miss a thing.
