Affinity question

In using Affinity to process Olympus raw files(.orf) I see a relatively sparse number of edits available. After "developing" there appear lots of editing options. My question is: what image format am I working on at this point? I know I can export to jpg or tiff. Why are the full range of edits not available in the raw stage?

When you first open a raw file in Affinity it is handled in the Develop Persona. Your raw file has to be converted into an RGB image before it can be further processed in Affinity's Photo Persona. After you click Develop the raw data is converted into RGB image data and transferred. In the Photo Persona you're working with a 16 bit RGB image as the normal Affinity default. You do have the option when you develop the raw data to specify a different bit depth for the conversion.

Affinity's Develop Persona is fairly modest by contemporary standards. Serif's model for Affinity places emphasis on the raster editing component (Photo) rather than the raw conversion component (Develop) and the options available in the software reflect that.

The Photo Workbook is absolutely amazing! I suggest you purchase it. The workbook goes step-by-step through various editing processes.

I use Affinity Photo but not as my main editor. Olympus Workspace is a free editor offered by Olympus and that is what I use for Olympus Raw data. It is a software that was developed by Olympus for its cameras and it preserves the original captured colors. It accepts only Adobe RGB as the wider color space but that has not been a headache for me. I cannot see the whole gamut of colors or anyone else anyway.

If printing Olympus colors is something you care about your best choice would be Workspace. For use in the Web actually it makes no difference what editor you use.

Correct. Anyone familiar with the power of full featured raw editors like Lightroom, Adobe Camera Raw, Capture One, DXO PhotoLab, ON1 and others may be disappointed by the Develop persona's limitations. However, one must view the power of the Develop and Photo persona together as a single entity since both lack tools and features present in the other.
