Some time before the Covid-19 pandemic was declared my wife and I went to Peru to visit Machu Picchu, Arequipa and Puno. These places take your breath away. First, we landed at Cusco, the Inca principal city, at an altitude of 3800m (12540 ft) over sea level.
The first couple of hours of the tour around the city, walking one block you feel like having run a triathlon. After that your body will equilibrate the reduced external pressure and you feel normal. The rest of the trip you will not be affected by the altitude.
Next day we traveled to Aguas Calientes the town close to Machu Picchu, also call Machu Picchu town. The name Aguas Calientes is due to the thermal water station in the town. The distance from Cusco to Aguas Calientes is about 90 Km (56 miles) and there are only two ways to go: 1) walking through the Inca trail, or 2) By train, that it takes about four hours traveling through the mountains. No cars of any type can arrive to that place. The only buses in the town is to drive you to the archeological site of Machu Picchu through the Hiram Bingham road. Of course, the other possibility is walk. Once in the archeological site you can do it by your own or in a group with a guide to understand more about the site and its history. Depending of your physical state and how many stops to take photos, you need between 4 to 6 Hours to visit all the places.
After our visit to the archeological site we came back to Cusco, rent a car and visit all the Sacred Valley. We visit the archeological sites Saqsaywaman, Q’enco, Puka Pukara, Tambomachay, Pisac y Ollantaytambo. One night in Ollantaytambo and next day way back and visit Maras Salt Mine, the Moray terraces,( according with the information was an experimental place for harvest yield) and Chinchero.
