External SSD formatting.

I have been switching to external SsDs for image storage and for backups. And Capture 1 Catalogues. I have incompatibilities in formatting involving Capture 1: the new MAC. Catalina, APS formatting and extended journaled format. Time machine has issue with new Mac formats and capture one has issues. It seems that the safest is to use an older format, but it’s not as quick as the newer formats.
I have a log of permission errors due to formatting. Has anyone else had this problem and how did you solve it. The issue is more complex than I am describing here, but it’s a start. Thank you.

I am puzzled by your assertion that Time Machine, a key part of the Mac OS, would have trouble with the Mac file system.

Have you asked Apple?

I have been using CP1 from before my 2018 MacBook Pro (APFS). Never had an issue with compatibility. I do know that TM is not compatible. Time Machine can accept backups from an APFS disk but cannot be be formatted itself in APFS. Most TM formats are in HFS+.
My external SSDs are still formatted in HFS+. These are my primary storage for all referenced files. I keep it like this so that in the event I ever need to access with a computer prior to APFS--you can.

I'm running MacOS Catalina and TimeMachine without problems, including files moved from previous OS versions. My TimeMachines are running on LaCie BigDrive RAIDs and there have been no problems. I suspect the problem is with the H/W on which you're running TimeMachine.

Xpatch, I rotate SSDs and image/clone them regularly in our computers, since they're fairly affordable and much more dependable now. That said, I've seen them die on boot up or for no reason at all. All of our WD platter drives we've owned over the past 20 years still work since we don't run them 24/7. Never tell anyone they shouldn't experience losing data in a heartbeat but seriously, that's exactly what happens when an SSD dies. We regularly image and clone our system SSDs and rotate all vault and backup drives. Always keep your system and drives on a large and dependable UPS/battery backup unit. Happy shooting:)
