Looking for a pocket sized camera. Had a Canon Elph-like that was great but lost it on a trip!

The Canon Elph 360 is close to what I had but lacks a view finder and gets several negative reliability reviews at Amazon.

A view finder would be a real plus as I like outdoor photography and the sun washes out a digital screen. Small size is most important - not cargo pocket size. Some telephoto also desired.

Definitely agree on the viewfinder. I often hike with a camera, and having the sun wash out the LCD, and having to pull out my reading glasses to see it, is a real pain. So, especially if you need readers and want to shoot and go, would recommend a getting a viewfinder with diopter adjustment. Much faster to compose and take the shoot, which is faster and therefore less disruptive to my hiking partners.

I just got the Sony RX100. Still learning it, but love it so far. Larger than the tiniest out there, but still fits in my pocket. If you want to save dollars, the “last year’s model” or used might be a way to go. The current M7 is slightly more, but you should also be able to find a M5 or M6 version.

Olympus TG-6. Lots of features, pocket size and Tough.

Oly TG-6. TG-5 is almost as good for less money. Shoots RAW if you care. I don't. Has a small range zoom but there is a screw-in telephoto available that works great as well as a screw-in ultra wide. Great built-in Macro. Waterproof, drop proof etc. The one thing I don't like is no viewfinder.

The Panasonic Lumix DC-ZS70 has a Leica lens with an amazing zoom range of 24-720mm equivalent. Has an eyelevel viewfinder and provides 20.3MP sensor. It may not perform as well as some of the cameras with a larger sensor, but the zoom range ads a great deal of versatility for a pocket camera. I have bought one for my wife and one of my daughters and they both love them. $298 at B&H and Adorama

You can probably find a used Panasonic Lumix DMC ZS60 like mine for that price. It takes a little larger pocket. I use a Lowepro case meant for a GoPro camera for it. Has a Leica lens to X30 zoom. It also has an electronic viewfinder. I have been using it more than my Pentax K-50 lately as it is easy to put in my purse.

Depending on whether or not you want pocketable;

1) Panasonic Lumix DC-ZS70 (currently an sale for $297.99 new) (pocketable in a large pocket)
2) Panasonic Lumix DC-FZ80 (currently an sale for $297.99 new) (not pocketable)

Both have viewfinders.

Instead of shopping by camera, try shopping by camera features. List three attributes you want in a camera (for example, viewfinder, long focal length, small size, whatever you want). Then look for a camera that has all three. Not all cameras have the same features.

Thanks, Phil, and all. Even this cam is a bit large. As for those suggestiong micro 4/3, I already have one and it is NOT pocketable unless it's a cargo pocket. I want less weight / size and to grab and shoot. May have to compromise with a Canon Elph even tho it has no viewfinder.

Sony HX99. This has been my only camera I carry on vacation. Has a 24-750 mm range, pop up viewfinder, sharp Zeiss lens, shots RAW, pop up flash, HDR, panoramic, and in a belt pouch I am hands free baby. Oh, did I mention, you get really sharp images from it.

I second this opinion. I own the hx99 and I LOVE IT!

OleMe, I'm in Denver and my camera store (Mike's Camera) people all love the Panasonic zoom point and shoots. I have a friend who has a Lumix ZS60 (4 3/8" wide by 2 1/2" high by 1 1/2" deep), 30x optical zoom, viewfinder, for sale. She got it about a year ago refurbished, and has never used it. It's in excellent condition. If you don't mind a used camera--personally, I've almost always bought used--I'm sure you can work out a good deal with her.

I have one myself, and it's always my back-up camera. Takes excellent pics.

You can easily look up the full specs on Google, and current prices on ebay or amazon. Let me know by private message.

It seems like you're looking for a SMALL camera - unfortunately some folks on this thread don't understand that. If you could find a small enough 1" sensor camera (hopefully with a viewfinder) you would get much higher photo quality than the smaller-sensor ELPH. Difficult to find that combination under $300. Maybe a used Sony RX-100 III? Best wishes.

The Sony HX99 and RX100 are the smallest, but no view finder. Lumix are a bit thicker and taller. Must be the view finder?

Yes, you are correct: SMALL is better for what I want. Lumix: i bought one for my daughter and the zoom stuck after a few shots. That stuck in my mind.

Thanks to all for suggestions.

If you can swing it,about $950, theSony RX 100 vii probably has everything you want and more. I find that I use mine for most everyday shooting in lieu of my Canon D90
