Please; have a go at composing/ cropping:

Although I feel no particular challenge in composing a portrait of a single blossom of almost any sort, when I am confronted by a mass of blossoms, as, f’rinstance, this glorious mass of crabapple blossoms, confusion reigns!

Please compose/ crop to you heart’s content - and please provide your reasonings behind your offerings

Many thanks,
Dave

I have no artistic ability at all. That having been said I would crop nothing. I would put it in PS and play with sharpness and color a little bit but nothing else.

Ok, Dave. I'll bite. Along with the crop (I like a good 2:1 ratio), I may have made another modification or two.

Otherwise, reasonings? We don't need no stinkin' reasonings!

If there was only a single glimpse of sky, I'd have approached differently. I think in this frame they balance each other, so I didn't crop. I like the idea of the center blossoms popping closer to the viewer from the full tree, and I wanted more interesting light. So here 'tis

Hi, Jim;
...well, I like your chosen proportions, and I like the diagonal light: dark balance! Stinking’ or not, them’s MY reasons for liking what you did!

Thank y’e,
Dave

Hi,Linda;
That’s pretty close to one my cropped versions - balancing the bright corners!
.. and I like your lighting effect!

Thanks much for your contribution.

I was fascinated by the "Y" shape formed by the tree in the background. Reminded me of my homemade slingshots when I was a boy. So I brought in the sides frame the slingshot and darkened the most distant edges somewhat. I know... reminiscing stinks!

The white background (garage door?) isn't ideal and I think that might be part of your problem. I just cropped in to the densest part of the blossoms and used a mixture of cloning and a custom vignette to subdue the white background as much as possible.

Thanks guyserman,
The vertical format is cool, and I see the flowers suggesting al lower left-to-upper right diagonal, and the tree as the opposite diagonal. Your slingshot as a triangle intersecting that diagonal!
Thanks for your constructive input!

Hi, Coz,
Yes, those sky patches were definite distractions ( all sky no “garage door”...gimme a break) and you skillfully got rid of them. That’s a really nice selection of just the right aggregate of blossom clumps which are improved by your pp touches.
Good lesson gratefully received!

Here's my take, Dave. I removed a lot of the space at the top and bottom with a simple crop. Seemed like it took away from the blooms. Then I cloned over a lot of the white spaces so they didn't distract. Finally, I added just a bit of vignette to bring the focus more toward the center.

Most of the edits I see here concentrate on that central mass. I think that is the key. I like the different interpretations of basically the same idea. That is the direction I think I would go.

I cropped mine in a 4 x 5 / 8 x 10 format. I made 2 color layers set to multiply around 55%. One was an average color of the whole picture that ended up being a tope color and another layer using the darkest brightest pink color. Made a duplicate base layer with a mask for the center blossom grouping. Moved it to the top to make them the center of attention.
