I haven't been to the garden store yet so I have to depend solely on the feeders to catch a hummingbird. I don't really like the red plastic in my pictures so stuck a bright pink silk flower in one of the ports. I'm sure I can make it more aesthetically pleasing with a bit of work. There were pictures aplenty last year from a gentleman named Dave who had set up a little hummingbird studio. Anyhow I was playing between Manual mode and Shutter Priority. All from the kitchen window.
Hi Marg, your flower idea is delightful! Looks like you are able to focus well and IMO showing a little blur in the wings is desirable as a reminder of how fast these cuties are.
I tried to check exif data for #2 to see which mode you used, but the information is missing. At any rate, it looks like that one could be brightened easily. I'm going to guess that shutter priority was metering off the brighter background, giving you under-exposed results.
What did you base your settings on when trying manual exposure?

Hi Linda. Not sure what happened to the exif data for number 2. It was manual mode, 1/2000, f5.6, iso 3200 (used auto iso) at 400 mm. Canon 80d with 100-400 ii
I wanted the aperture wide open because of the shutter speed plus I wanted the background blurred.

OK, so wanting widest aperture, you were limited with other settings. I love auto ISO, but not with tricky lighting. On the other hand, your camera probably handles under-exposure and high ISO much better than mine do

I've been told the camera is good for up to iso 6400. I'm not sure I agree with that, although maybe once I learn to do some editing I will find it to be true. Wouldn't that be nice!

Thanks! I'll head over for some hand holding soon!
From the looks of this set, Marg, very little hand holding will be required.
