Can anyone get this bird to stand out from background without isolating the bird and tweaking the background?

If you lighten the light parts of the bird they will end up even closer to the background level of brightness, and it looks like the dark parts of the bird are already quite dark. Tweaking the background is about the only way forward. And I'm not sure how you could get the bird to stand out and at the same time not isolate it from the background, since it's the bird's similarity to the background that's the problem.

How's this.....? Tried to match the bird color to what I assume was a feather on the ground.

The birds coloration allows it to blend into the background. If you want it to stand out you have to change aspects of either the background or the bird.

Hi Jack, here is my effort. I selected the bird and grass in its beak and made it into a new layer, used the camera raw filter to brighten the bird with the vibrance slider to get the bird brighter. I softened the grass round the edges so it would blend back into the background.. Used the spot healing brush to remove the yellow bit..

I just eliminated most of the background. Plenty of pixels left for a nice 4x5 crop.

The bird’s coloration is Mother Nature’s way of giving it protection from predators. Don’t mess with Mother Nature.

Or you could use a gradient filter to selectively blur the background.

You need to darken and radically lower the contrast of the bkg. You could also try the Shadows/Highlights slider. In either case you are going to have to select the bird out of the bkg. to accomplish.
