I have both the D500 & D850. I love the D500 for wildlife. I live in Florida so we have abundant wildlife. While I find myself using the D850 more & more for wildlife, the thing I don’t like about the D850 it will just stop when shooting in the fastest mode! It will take several frames and the just stop, it will pick up again in a couple of minutes. The D500 does not do that. The D850 is an amazing camera except for that one irritation.

If you're going with just one body, the D850 is ideal. Great autofocus, and you can use it in either FX or crop mode. If your budget allows, the D850 + D500 is the "perfect" combo. The D500 is essentially a cropped version of the D850. The D850/D500 combo gives you the most versatility. Both cameras have the same controls and menu system, etc., so it's really easy to switch between the two. But if you want to stick to one body, it's pretty hard to find anything that will top the D850 right now.

I agree. That’s the combo I have. Love both cameras.

I have the D800 and the old Fuji S5 Pro(uses Nikon lenses) that's the only camera for best Straight Out of the Camera JPEGs, though the little Fuji X A1 is brilliant for that too. In the pocket the tiny Canon EOS M is the best you can carry ( metal body!) and you can use all Canon EOS lenses including L with the Canon adaptor. Not finished yet I also use the Canon 5D and 40D - and don't listen to anybody, 12" X 18" is the biggest clear enlargement you'll get on a ten pixel 40D today , I wouldn't chance bigger , not even on tripod. For bigger, shooting Canon, I use my Canon 1Ds mark 111.

I have a 400 mm Makinon that's great on tripod, or sometimes monopod, on the D800 for distance ( sports and wildlife) photos. Otherwise the Canon EF 70-200/4 L IS at 200 on the IDs Mark 111 with the 70-200 fabulous for outdoor portraiture.

There is NO such thing as a reach advantage for the D500 or any DX camera with a full frame lens on it - Folks on this site that are ill informed keep saying this - IT'S NOT TRUE. A 500mm lens is still a 500mm lens even on a DX or "Crop Sensor" camera. The field of view is different and for some reason Those folks believe they get this magical increase in focal length. There are plenty of charts that show this on UHH. So please STOP tricking yourself into that fictional belief. Good luck with your next camera choice.

I notice that you have received a comment or two suggesting that the D500 is smaller and lighter than the D850. Please do not set yourself up for disappointment by believing that uninformed statement. The D500 is ever so slightly thinner in the front to back direction than the D850. But for all practical intents, the cameras are the same size and weight.

There's often a reach advantage with a DX camera but only because cropped sensor cameras usually have a higher pixel density. It's putting more pixels on the target. That's not the case with the DX format Nikon D500 (20.9MP) and FX format Nikon D850 (45MP). They both have about the same pixel density.

Probably will add a D500 to the pack. Holding out for a refurbished model. Any suggestions?

For refurbished, I'd ordinarily suggest trying NikonUSA first, but don't know if they are currently open and able to ship products. You may have to check and see which of the major retailers are open and shipping.

B&H sells Nikon-refurbished D500s, but they're only about $300 less than a new D500:
