Why do you people always want to over complicate the issue. When using an FX lens on a DX camera you will work exactly the same as a DX lens of the same focal length. You are not throwing anything away and you’re not increasing your reach. Now if you’re going from a full frame camera to a crop, the view will change, but your crop sensor camera will give you the same view regardless of whether it’s DX or FX.

I use a Tamron (28-75 f/2.8) full frame lens on my D3000 and it doesn't do anything out of the ordinary except let me open up the lens a lot more.

You throw away half of the image formed by the lens which you paid for.

That’s a ridiculous statement.

Based on your experience? I shot same landscape scenes using crop-frame camera vs FF camera and the same FX lens on each. If you haven't, you need to in order to see the error of your ways.

That wasn’t the question. I shoot three different formats, FF, crop and M4/3 and certainly understand how different focal lengths work on all 3.

And, you get a bit more reach. I rarely use my DX lenses on DX cameras. Not a pixel peeper, but IMO the FX lenses are mostly better. There are some good DX ones, and to CC's point, they are generally smaller and lighter than FX glass.

You may want to rethink this. The camera doesn't know or care what the size of the image circle is, so no, you won't get any more reach using a 50mm FX lens vs using a 50mm DX lens on a DX camera.

Tell SuperFlyTNT that. He said I made ridiculous statement. To make lens with larger image circle does cost money and they do charge more for that. Check the price on large format and medium format lenses.

He was proud because he thought you were trolling. He didn’t realize you were serious.

What about he pixel on the DX body?

Not sure what your question means. The lens, whether DX or FX, doesn't know or care what "pixels" are on the sensor at the film/sensor plane. The lens simply focuses a circular image at the "film" plane for the sensor to record. A FX lens will focus a larger image than needed to fully cover the DX sensor. The DX sensor essentially crops from the central part of the focused image ( ie. the crop factor, 1.5 for Nikon).

What's the difference between trolling and serious?

I have a Nikon D7100. I had a friend of mine give me, he bought a Sony, an FX lens. What are the disadvantages of using the FX lens on a DX body.

for many years I bought FX lens to use on a DX camera ..... only because I knew that one day I would migrate to an FX camera .... which I eventually did ...

Then show it. The OP's question was: " What are the disadvantages of using the FX lens on a DX body."

I can’t be responsible for bringing you up to date in the internet age. You’ll need to do your own research.

No disadvantages. Full-frame lenses will tend to be larger and heavier and more expensive, that's all.

And sometimes, though not necessarily always, of better build quality. My $500 70-300 FX lens IS built better than the $150 DX version.
