Is Lab Color one of Photoshop's modes? Presumably it uses the LAB colour space which allows you to work on luminance (brightness/contrast) and chrominance (colour) separately. If that's the case it's definitely made for a well-optimised edit while maintaining a natural look. I don't have Ps but I'm hoping to find a way to experiment with LAB processing because I like the sound of it.

Yes it is part of Photoshop. I don't use it as often as I should. You are correct in your assessment of LAB color space for brightness/ contrast and color. I fiddled around with your posted pictures yesterday trying to enhance it but failed using normal RGB mode. I couldn't separate the flowers from the grass. As I changed one it was changing the other at the same time with an unwanted results so never posted on that thread.

From your post in FYC you know I'm enamored with those rocks - as you described, ...considerable geological upheaval in the past. So I wanted to bring out their textures. But also, the calm sea and mostly soft clouds (with hints of localized rain showers), and those charming flowers, suggests to me a very pleasant and bright spring day.

Your colouring and lighting are indeed in keeping with what it's been like there recently. Perhaps it's because of your familiarity with that kind of environment. You're probably also familiar with the very fresh breeze that was blowing .

LAB keeps things distinct and separate, which I suspect is a good way to learn processing. Perhaps we should have RGB for a ramped up look and LAB for a natural look.

Having got the shots I wanted from my outing I found I had this left over and decided to put it up for editing. Feel free to edit it in any way you think fit. And don't forget to share your results.
(JPG and TIFF).

Here is my effort. I tried to make it a bit more dramatic... especially pullingout the sky. Too many little things to enumerate.

The original was a very good shot... leaving a lot of possibilities.

This isn't the photo I put up for editing - but it's close enough.

There's lots of drama in the sky, but I'm also seeing one or two artefacts. But overall the editing has brought out the dramatic lighting.

My error if it was different. I did think it was the same as a day or so ago. I'll go back (if I can) to compare them. But they were fine shots... both of them

The ones I posted in this thread are either a full size jpeg or a 21MB TIFF at reduced resolution - both better propositions than a 2MB jpeg file.

Here is my take on an edit of your photograph done in PS using a two layer mask to keep the sky yet lighten the rocks and flowers. Plus crop to accent to curve of the shoreline. Merged into jpeg

It was the light levels that was the tricky part. And you went for an even more channelled composition than I did .

Thanks for contributing, Flying Three.

Lots of texture and detail in both versions. Thanks for taking part, MW.
