We’ve been blessed with a growing population of Great Blue Heron. Also several varieties of ducks, swans, Great Egrets, Osprey, and visiting bald eagles.
I’ve been visiting a few times a week since late March to see what I can find. Nikon D810, 200-500 f/5.6. Typically tripod mounted, but I’ve tried a bit of hand-held with the beast. ISO typically 800 or 1000, shutter priority typically 1/800 or 1/1000. Exposure compensation +1 EV. Clean-up in Lightroom, including cropping.
I liked the shots very much! We have a heronry near us and it it always good to visit.
I think I need to take a tripod.
Shortly after I got the lens I invested in a tripod and gimbal head. I’ve since bought a ball head, and am figuring out what I like best.
Extended handholding is out of the question.

The older I get, even more so! 😆
